    Check if your Android phone is patched against the 'Master Key' exploit with this app

    After discovering a longstanding exploit in Android firmware dating back to version 1.6 that allowed malicious developers to circumvent software security measures, Bluebox Security released an Android app this week for users to check whether their phone is still vulnerable to the exploit. Since Bluebox's report last week, Google acknowledged the issue and released a patch that it says is in the hands of OEMs and already being pushed out by certain manufacturers (Samsung, for one).     De la Renta joins Clintons and pantsuit in Ark.

    LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) ? It's not quite "Project Pantsuit," but it's not far off.

    Hillary Rodham Clinton on Monday honored fashion designer Oscar de la Renta, the man responsible for a teal, silk pantsuit she wore when she was sworn in as a senator.

    The two shared the stage together last month in New York when Clinton, a self-professed pantsuit aficionado, presented de la Renta with the Council of Fashion Designers of America's highest honor and joked about a fictional "Project Runway" spinoff, "Project Pantsuit."

    They met again Monday evening in Little Rock, where some of de la Renta's work ? including the teal pantsuit ? is on display at the William J. Clinton Presidential Center.

    Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, thanked de la Renta for his work and his friendship as they feted him and his temporary exhibit called "Oscar de la Renta: American Icon," which opened in May and runs through Dec. 1.

    "I was not asked to open this relatively brief ceremony because I am the most expert person on this stage in the field of high fashion," the former president said in the company of de la Renta and Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour.

    Wintour, meanwhile, praised de la Renta and his work with first ladies and Clinton for her work over the years, most recently as secretary of state.

    "She always looked entirely appropriate wherever she was and nearly always in Oscar," Wintour said.

    Wintour drew applause from the crowd when she mentioned the former first lady as a potential presidential candidate in 2016.

    "It's anyone's guess what the next chapter will be for this extraordinary woman," Wintour said. "I can only hope that all of you here in Little Rock will be celebrating her come November 2016."

    Clinton didn't discuss her future or poke fun at her penchant for pantsuits on Monday.

    Instead, she thanked de la Renta, whom she has called a "dear friend."

    "Oscar has really treated first ladies such as myself and Nancy Reagan and Laura Bush with such great support," she said. "And sometimes, as Chelsea knows, he's even dressed our daughters."

    That was evidenced at the de la Renta exhibit, where Clinton's daughter's garb was displayed near her teal pantsuit.

    That pantsuit, which hardly needs a placard identifying who wore it, stands near a red, cashmere outfit Laura Bush wore in 2008 and a beige ensemble Nancy Reagan donned two decades earlier.

    Visitors also see reproductions of a couple of de la Renta dresses Clinton has worn over the years, but the pantsuit stands out.

    The signage surrounding her pantsuit, much like her new Twitter biography, plays on the prominent pantsuits she's worn.

    Clinton calls herself a "pantsuit aficionado" on Twitter. However, the wording on a placard at the exhibit ? much like the exhibit itself ? is a bit more highbrow.

    "Pantsuits designed by Oscar de la Renta are perhaps Hillary Clinton's most famous sartorial statement," a sign says.

    Across the exhibit, flowers bloom from a handful of the designer's evening gowns. Another array of dresses pay homage to the Dominican-born designer's time in Spain. A mannequin wearing a black-and-white polka dot mermaid dress pauses as if frozen while dancing flamenco, her arms snaking through the air.

    "What I saw in Spain colored the way I have looked at clothes ever since," de la Renta says in a quote displayed on the wall.

    The former first ladies' outfits don't look quite like they walked off the streets of Seville, but they're still clearly de la Renta ? a designer who has built relationships with a number of women in the White House.

    "Oscar has been a dear friend to me, and many other first ladies. His designs are truly beautiful and exemplify American style," Laura Bush said in a quote near the red suit she wore five years ago for the White House Holiday Press Preview.

    Even the former president lamented the fact that he's never worn one of de la Renta's dresses.

    "Well, as your daughter, Dad, I'm grateful you never wore one of Oscar's dresses," Chelsea Clinton said.

    Offers first look from observation of water system affecting fate of crucial glacier

    AUSTIN, Texas In a development that will help predict potential sea level rise from the Antarctic ice sheet, scientists from The University of Texas at Austin's Institute for Geophysics have used an innovation in radar analysis to accurately image the vast subglacial water system under West Antarctica's Thwaites Glacier. They have detected a swamp-like canal system beneath the ice that is several times as large as Florida's Everglades.

    The findings, as described this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, use new observational techniques to address long-standing questions about subglacial water under Thwaites, a Florida-sized outlet glacier in the Amundsen Sea Embayment considered a key factor in projections of global sea level rise. On its own, Thwaites contains enough fresh water to raise oceans by about a meter, and it is a critical gateway to the majority of West Antarctica's potential sea level contribution of about 5 meters.

    The new observations suggest the dynamics of the subglacial water system may be as important as well recognized ocean influences in predicting the fate of Thwaites Glacier.

    Without an accurate characterization of the bodies of water deep under Thwaites, scientists have offered competing theories about their existence and organization, especially in the rapidly changing region where the glacier meets the ocean.

    Using an innovation in airborne ice-penetrating radar analysis developed by lead author Dusty Schroeder, a doctoral candidate at the Institute for Geophysics, the Texas team shows that Thwaites' subglacial water system consists of a swamp-like canal system several times as large as Florida's Everglades lying under the deep interior of the ice sheet, shifting to a series of mainly stream-like channels downstream as the glacier approaches the ocean.

    Scientists have attempted to use ice-penetrating radar to characterize subglacial water for many years, but technical challenges related to the effects of ice temperature on radar made it difficult to confirm the extent and organization of these water systems. Schroeder's technique looking at the geometry of reflections solves this problem, because the temperature of the ice does not affect the angular distribution of radar energy.

    "Looking from side angles, we found that distributed patches of water had a radar signature that was reliably distinct from stream-like channels," said Schroeder. He compared the radar signature to light glinting off the surface of many small interconnected ponds when viewed out of an airplane window.

    Distinguishing subglacial swamps from streams is important because of their contrasting effect on the movement of glacial ice. Swamp-like formations tend to lubricate the ice above them whereas streams, which conduct water more efficiently, are likely to cause the base of the ice to stick between the streams. (The effect is similar to the way rain grooves on a tire can help prevent a car from hydroplaning on a wet road.)

    As a result of this change in slipperiness, the glacier's massive conveyor belt of ice piles up at the zone where the subglacial water system transitions from swamps to streams.

    This transition forms a stability point along a subglacial ridge that holds the massive glacier on the Antarctic continent.

    "This is where ocean and ice sheet are at war, on that sticking point, and eventually one of them is going to win," said co-author Don Blankenship, a senior research scientist from the Institute for Geophysics.

    Observations of the subglacial stream-and-swamp dynamic and the sub-ice topography suggest that Thwaites Glacier is stable in the short term, holding its current position on the continent. However, the large pile of ice that has built up in the transition zone could rapidly collapse if undermined by the ocean warming or changes to the water system.

    "Like many systems, the ice can be stabilized until some external factor causes it to jump its stability point," said Blankenship. "We now understand both how the water system is organized and where that dynamic is playing itself out. Our challenge is to begin to understand the timing and processes that will be involved when that stability is breached."

    Current models predicting the fate of the glacier do not yet account for these dynamic, subglacial processes.

    The findings rely on radar data acquired during airborne geophysical surveys over West Antarctica by the Institute for Geophysics, with operational support from the National Science Foundation. The analysis was enabled through intensive supercomputing supported by the university's Texas Advanced Computing Center.
