LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The Academy Awards are a big deal ? even to A-listers. That's why a parade of stars came through the theater at the Hollywood & Highland Center Saturday to run through their lines and prepare to address their peers in front of a worldwide audience of millions.
MUPPET REHEARSAL: Even celebrities of the felt variety took time to practice their lines. Though Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy have been famous for decades, they still rehearsed like the dedicated pros they are.
The two Muppets and their invisible operators delighted the crew of show workers with their playful banter and puppet antics. Film academy president Tom Sherak was so taken with the two that he sat nearby throughout their rehearsal.
"Hey Don, it's been too long," Kermit said to the show's producer-director, Don Mischer.
"I'm going to try to get up there and see you," Mischer replied over the theater loudspeaker.
"I have no idea how to get down there," huffed Miss Piggy.
After their rehearsal, the two formally dressed stars were placed on special stands, shrouded in black cloth and carried away.
BACKSTAGE MEETING: Oscar host Billy Crystal, who has declined to speak with reporters and kept his rehearsals closed throughout the week, emerged from his dressing room to observe the proceedings Saturday. Wearing jeans, sneakers and a newsboy cap, the comedian blended in with the rest of the backstage workers? so much so that he had to re-introduce himself to an admired colleague.
"Hi James, Billy Crystal," he said to James Earl Jones, who received a Governors Award late last year and will be honored again at Sunday's ceremony.
As soon as the actor recognized Crystal, he hugged him.
"With that cap on, I thought you were a hoodlum," Jones said before wishing the comedian well on his ninth Oscar-hosting stint.
"Have fun tonight," Jones said, "and tomorrow night."
A BLAST OF "BRIDESMAIDS": The cast of "Bridesmaids" reunited on the Oscar stage and dosed the theater with a blast of energy.
"Oh my God, I cannot believe I'm there!" Rose Byrne said when she spotted her seat near the front of the theater.
"I see you!" Maya Rudolph said to Kristin Wiig, pointing out her seat-saving placard.
As the actresses prepared to make their entrance alongside co-stars Melissa McCarthy, Ellie Kemper and Wendi McLendon-Covey, they threw up jazz hands and pretended to disco dance. McLendon-Covey also played an oversized air guitar.
Once they emerged and hit their marks, McLendon-Covey pointed her toe and lifted her skirt to overtly flash some leg, cracking up the audience of show workers. (The rest of the women wore pants ? and all rocked in towering heels.)
When Wiig missed one of her lines, she confessed, "I'm so glad we're doing this rehearsal!"
FUNNY WOMEN: Emma Stone ran into the "Bridesmaids" cast as she stepped into the wings, stage right.
Oscar producer Brian Grazer introduced her to the rest of the ladies.
"I hear about you all the time!" Stone gushed to Melissa McCarthy, who is nominated for her supporting role in the film.
"The Help" star then turned to Maya Rudolph and told her, "You on 'Saturday Night Live' was so amazing!"
Stone offered a round of hugs, but Kristin Wiig stayed back.
"I have a cold, so I can't get in there," said Wiig, a nominee for the "Bridesmaids" screenplay.
"So we can't make out right now?" Stone replied.
When she noticed the women's statuesque stilettos, Stone asked: "Wait, were we supposed to bring shoes?"
Still, she stepped on stage in her flats and soared through her rehearsal.
PHOTO OPP: Even veteran producer and multiple Oscar winner Brian Grazer was excited about seeing stars: The Academy Awards producer posed with nearly every celebrity who came to rehearsals.
"Can I take a picture with you guys? For my obituary?" the 61-year-old said to presenters Tina Fey and Bradley Cooper, who happily obliged.
"I want one picture," Grazer declared to Sandra Bullock, who said, "We just did one!" Still, she smiled for another photo.
Chris Rock posed for multiple pictures with the producer and his sons, both on stage and in the green room.
"When I came to town, Grazer was running things," Rock said. "Thirty years later, nothing's changed."
Christian Bale came to the theater carrying his young daughter, who was wearing a wizard costume. He handed her off to his wife to pose with Grazer.
Colin Firth and Tom Hanks also took pictures with the producer.
"You can take as many as you like," Firth said.
FAKE OSCARS, REAL PRESENTER: Tom Hanks wore jeans, boots and his always-affable smile at his morning rehearsal. The two-time Oscar winner and Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences governor posed for photos with the show's producers before practicing his presentation.
"Brian Grazer, can you believe it?" Hanks said as he embraced the producer. "You saved the day!"
Grazer stepped in as co-producer with Don Mischer in November after Brett Ratner ? who had been tapped to co-produce with Mischer ? resigned following his public use of a gay slur.
Hanks greeted the camera operators and stage managers who've worked the Oscar show for years before presenting his category.
After opening the prop envelope, the actor said, "The fake rehearsal Oscar goes to..."

Debt | Greece Launches Debt Swap Offer To ... - Freedom Debt Relief

Greece on Friday launched a debt swap offer to private creditors holding nearly 206 billion euros of Greek debt, hoping to cut the total amount the country owes by about a third, a statement said.
?The bonds invited to participate in (the swap) have an aggregate outstanding value of approximately 206 billion euros ($271 billion),? the Greek finance ministry and the debt management agency said.
The swap is expected to cut 107 billion euros from Greece?s total 350 billion euros debt mountain.
Athens said it was seeking participation from at least 75 percent of bonds selected, or the transaction will be called off.
?If less than 75 percent of the aggregate face amount of the bonds selected to participate are validly tendered for exchange?the (Hellenic) Republic will not proceed with any of the transactions described above,? it said.
It noted that under legislation approved on Thursday, the exchange becomes binding for bonds governed by Greek law ?if at least two thirds by face amount of a quorum of these bonds?approve the proposed amendments.?
At issue is the idea that the private creditor debt swap has to be judged to be ?voluntary? overall and would be if two-thirds sign up.
If it cannot be classed as voluntary, then those private creditors opposed to it could invoke their Credit Default Swaps, a type of financial instrument taken out to insure against a loss on an investment.
Should that happen, the whole deal could begin to unravel, leading to heavy costs for the counterparties to the CDS (SNP: ^CDSY ? news ) deals.
Eligible bonds covered by the exchange announced on Friday include maturities ranging from March 20 to July 2057.
Holders of Greek debt will receive new bonds with a face value equal to 31.5 percent of the face amount of the debt exchanged, plus European Financial Stability Facility notes with a maturity date of two years or less from the debt swap settlement date on March 12.
The short-term notes from the EFSF, which are backed by the EU?s strongest economies like Germany, are meant as a highly liquid sweetner to push creditors to accept the swap.
Holders will also receive growth-linked securities equal to the face amount of the new bonds, the offer said.
The interest rate offered on the new bonds is 2.0 percent to 2015, 3.0 percent to 2020, 3.65 percent to 2021 and 4.3 percent from 2022 and thereafter, until the latest maturity of 2042.
On March 20, Greece faces a repayment of 14.43 billion euros it cannot make if the debt write-down fails.
The swap, in effect a cancellation of nearly a third of the 350 billion euros in debt owed by Greece, is part of a rescue stitched together with the eurozone and International Monetary Fund to avert default.
This particular offer is not open to private sector holders in the United States, who will be invited to participate in a concurrent exchange offer with cash replacing the offer of EFSF notes.
Similarly, Swiss holders may not exchange their bonds but will be invited to consent to amendments.
Greek maturities have hit rock-bottom after successive months of downgrades from the three main global rating agencies, Fitch, Moody?s and Standard and Poor?s.
Fitch this week said that a Greek default was ?highly likely? as it cut its credit rating on Greece again from ?CCC? to ?C?.
The two-notch drop meant it was now at the bottom of the speculative grades and just one step above formal default.
Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos this week said rating agencies ?might declare Greece in selective default? while the debt-swap operation was ongoing.
But he added: ?A selective default is only critical if the ECB (European Central Bank) and the eurozone consider it so. There is a full mechanism to cover liquidity in the meantime.?

The Indian prime minister has blamed US non-governmental organisations for the delay in commissioning the Koodankulam nuclear plant in Tamil Nadu state.
Manmohan Singh told the prestigious Science journal that these groups did not appreciate India's growing energy requirements.
The plant has been stalled by protests from local people over safety concerns.
Mr Singh also blamed US and Scandinavian groups for opposing genetically modified crops in India.
Critics say Mr Singh's comments hark back to the pre-liberalisation days when Indian politicians blamed all of India's problems on foreign countries.
"You know what's happening in Koodankulam," Mr Singh said, referring to months of protests which have stalled the commissioning of two 1,000-MW nuclear reactors at the plant in Tirunalveli district.
"The atomic energy programme has gone into difficulties because these NGOs [non-governmental organisations], mostly I think based in the United States, don't appreciate the need for our country to increase the energy supply."
Referring to a 2010 government decision to defer the commercial cultivation of the genetically modified vegetable BT brinjal, Mr Singh said biotechnology had enormous potential and India must make use of it to increase agricultural produce.
"But there are controversies. There are NGOs, often funded from the United States and the Scandinavian countries, which are not fully appreciative of the development challenges that our country faces.
"But we are a democracy, we are not like China," he said.

Mexican army finds 15 tons of pure methamphetamine (AP)
GUADALAJARA, Mexico ? The historic seizure of 15 tons of pure methamphetamine in western Mexico, equal to half of all meth seizures worldwide in 2009, feeds growing speculation that the country could become a world platform for meth production, not just a supplier to the United States.
The sheer scale of the bust announced late Wednesday in Jalisco state suggests involvement of the powerful Sinaloa cartel, a major international trafficker of cocaine and marijuana that has moved into meth production and manufacturing on an industrial scale.
Army officials didn't say what drug gangs could have been behind the dozens of blue barrels filled with powdered meth. Army Gen. Gilberto Hernandez Andreu said the meth was ready for packaging. There was no information on where the drugs were headed.
Jalisco has long been considered the hub of Sinaloa's meth production and trafficking. Meanwhile, meth use is growing in the United States, already the world's biggest market for illicit drugs.
The haul could have supplied 13 million doses worth over $4 billion on U.S. streets.
The Sinaloa cartel, headed by Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, is equipped to produce and distribute drugs "for the global village," said Antonio Mazzitelli, the regional representative of the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime.
"Such large-scale production could suggest an expansion ... into Latin American and Asian markets," Mazzitelli said of the find. But he also noted, "it may be a product that hasn't been able to be sold, and like any business, when the market is depressed, stockpiles build up."
A senior U.S. law enforcement official in Mexico said Thursday this week's bust in Jalisco was "probably Sinaloa."
The official, who could not be named for security reasons, said Sinaloa may be trying "to reduce its reliance on Colombian cocaine by flooding the market with meth."
Reporters were shown barrels of white and yellow powder that filled three rooms on a small ranch outside of Guadalajara, Mexico's second-largest city.
The lot around the house, which included an empty swimming pool, was littered with metal canisters and cauldrons used in the production process. While the equipment appeared makeshift and partially dismantled during a tour of the facility given to news media, it was apparently used intensively.
There were no people found on the ranch or arrests made, although it appeared 12 to 15 people worked there.
"This could potentially put a huge dent in the supply chain in the U.S," said U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration spokesman Rusty Payne. "When we're taking this much out of the supply chain, it's a huge deal."
But that may not ultimately mean less meth in the U.S. Law enforcement officials in California's Central Valley, a hub of the U.S. methamphetamine distribution network, say a cutoff in the Mexican supply could mean domestic super labs will increase production.
"This will be a big seizure and will most likely slow down distribution for a short period of time until manufacturing can continue," said Robert Penal, a meth expert and former commander of California's Fresno Methamphetamine Task Force. "However, when there is an interruption in supply it is not uncommon for domestic super labs in California to start up operations to fill the void until the supply from Mexico can be restored."
Tom Farmer, director of the Tennessee Methamphetamine Task Force, believes the seizure could have a big impact in his state. Tennessee led the nation in clandestine meth lab busts in 2010 with 2,082, but the majority of meth in the state comes from Mexico.
Farmer said the Mexican meth is often made without pseudoephedrine, an ingredient commonly found in cold and allergy pills, which has been banned in Mexico and restricted in the United States. Most meth made in clandestine U.S. labs is made with pseudoephedrine, making it a more powerful high, he said.
"Meth users prefer domestic dope," Farmer said. "What they end up using is a combination of both. They'll use the local dope for special occasions, but when it comes to feeding their habit, they'll revert back to Mexican meth."
The Mexican army said troops received several anonymous tips and found the massive drug stash in the township of Tlajomulco de Zuniga, near the Jalisco state capital of Guadalajara. The army statement said "the historic seizure (is) the most important in terms of quantity of methamphetamines (seized) at one time."
The previous biggest bust announced by the army came in June 2010, when soldiers found 3.1 metric tons (3.4 tons) of pure meth in three interconnected warehouses in the central state of Queretaro, along with hundreds of tons of precursor chemicals used to make meth. A giant underground lab was also found in Sinaloa state.
Those other seizures were believed to be linked to the Sinaloa cartel.
The size of the Jalisco bust stunned Steve Preisler, an industrial chemist who wrote the book "Secrets of Methamphetamine Manufacture" and is sometimes called the father of modern meth-making.
"I have never seen quantity in that range," Preisler wrote. But he added: "The amounts of precursors they were importing would produce multi-tons of product."
There has also been a dramatic increase in seizures of meth-making chemicals imported to Mexico from countries such as China.
In December alone, Mexican authorities seized 675 tons of a key precursor chemical, methylamine, that can yield its weight in uncut meth. All of the shipments were headed for Guatemala, where the Sinaloa cartel is also active. Officials in Guatemala, meanwhile, seized 7,847 barrels of precursors in 2011, equivalent to about 1,600 tons.
After a dip in 2007, the supply of methamphetamine in the United States has been growing, mainly due to its manufacture in Mexico, according to U.S. drug intelligence sources.
Between 2007 and 2009, seizures of methamphetamine by U.S. authorities along the Mexican border increased by 87 percent, according to the 2011 U.N. World Drug Report, the most recent statistics the U.N. has available.
Eighty percent of the meth coming into the U.S. is seized at the Mexican border, according to the National Drug Intelligence Center.
Few people use pure meth, and street cuts can be three or even five parts filler. A pound of meth can sell for about $15,000.

Chronic use can lead to psychosis, which includes hearing voices and experiencing hallucinations. The stimulant effect of meth is up to 50 times longer than cocaine, experts say, so users stay awake for days on end, impairing cognitive function and contributing to extreme paranoia.
Users are known to lose massive amounts of weight, suffer scabs on their bodies and even lose teeth to "meth mouth" caused when saliva dries up and decay takes over.

'Zaching': Maryland Teen With Brain Cancer Inspires Web ...
Zach Lederer jokes he was a little ?drugged up? when, in his hospital bed, he lifted his arms in a strongman pose, stared resolutely ahead and allowed himself to be photographed.
After battling childhood cancer, Lederer, an 18-year-old from Ellicott City, wanted anyone who would listen to know he could do it again. On Jan. 25, surgeons at Johns Hopkins had removed a cancerous tumor from his brain, but some of it remained.
Another fight was ahead.
He said he thought, ?If I make these muscles and show everyone how strong I am right now, they?ll stop worrying about me and think, ?Oh he?ll be great.??
His father posted the picture on Facebook.
Hours later, his cousins Jon Feldman and Joey O?Dwyer lifted their arms in the same pose in a show of strength and solidarity, and posted as well.
?The ?Tebow? is no longer ?in,?" read the caption, referring to the drop-on-one-knee-and-pray pose started by Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow. "Now it?s the Zach Lederer,? read the caption. ?Stay strong, big man. We love you!?
And just like that, a viral web sensation was born in support of Lederer, who will soon start undergoing radiation and chemotherapy to treat the cancer he and his family thought he had bested at age 11, the year he had his first brain surgery.?
Hundreds, if not more, friends and supporters of Lederer have posed in pictures of themselves on Facebook and Tumblr ?Zaching,? the word people use to describe the strongman pose inspired by Zach.
Those include: his sister Julia Lederer, a 16-year-old junior at Centennial High; Craig Robinson, the actor who plays ?Darryl? from The Office television show; Del. Liz Bobo, Lederer's grandmother; the 7th Marine Regiment based in California; countless young women?in sororities, dance marathons and in South Miami; police officers from the Howard County Police Department; babies, dogs, sport teams; families posing in their kitchens--and the chefs from Sushi Sono in downtown Columbia.
Photos of people ?Zaching? have come from across the nation, ranging from the Rockefeller Center to Indiana University to Long Reach High School.
?Zaching? has come in other forms as well.
University of Maryland men's basketball coaches recently all wore white dress shoes during the game against Miami in a show of support of Lederer, who is the student manager for the team.
On Friday, Gov. Martin O?Malley called Lederer to check on him.
?He told me he?s with me and he?s praying for me,? Lederer said. ?That means the world to me.?
Lederer said that with each post in which someone is ?Zaching,? he or she is also supporting ?every cancer patient you come into contact with.?

Family members and supporters of Lederer said his strongman pose has a deep meaning to those who know him, and that?s part of the reason people have been so quick to participate in ?Zaching.?
?You really are exceptional,? his mother, Christine Lederer, told him Sunday during an interview with Zach, his mother and father by Patch.? ?I don?t know too many people who would handle this like you.?
As a sixth grader at Burleigh Manor Middle School, Zach and his mother went to the pediatrician?s office to investigate headaches so terrible they made him vomit.
He was told to go immediately to the emergency room at Johns Hopkins University, where a brain specialist delivered the bad news.
He had a tumor. And, it was fatal.
?They said, ?Take him home, make him comfortable,'? said Zach?s father, John Lederer. ?They said he may not make it through the night. They couldn?t believe he walked in there. Honestly, it couldn?t be worse news. It was as bad as it gets.?
The hospital neurosurgical team consulted with internationally known Johns Hopkins neurosurgeon Ben Carson, who was on call the night Lederer was brought to the emergency room. Carson heard the grim diagnosis from his colleagues and decided to take Lederer's case, family members said.
What followed was a three-and-a-half month ordeal that included brain surgery and a week in a medically induced coma during which swelling in Zach's brain forced doctors to remove parts of his skull to make room.
Doctors were unable to remove the tumor after surgery, which was encased in blood vessels, and instead prescribed six months of radiation, family members said.
While in recovery, Lederer relearned how to eat, talk and walk. Over time, his tumor began to shrink.
Soon enough, he went back to sixth grade and started his life again.
By the time he was a senior at Centennial High School, what was once a walnut-sized mass was about a centimeter in diameter, his family told The Washington Post in 2010.
For Zach, that only meant one thing.
He wanted to play football.
Even though he had a ventricular shunt in his head, as well as a titanium plate to replace the skull that was removed during his childhood surgery, he was determined, the Post reported.
The coach at the time, Ken Senisi, spoke to Lederer's parents, who then spoke to Carson.
They all agreed that Lederer could play.
?I thought it was the greatest thing in the world,? Lederer said. ?What better way to show everyone I?ve beaten this disease that takes away so many.?
Lederer, then 150 pounds, played cornerback.
His courage was profiled by The Washington Post, CNN and the Baltimore Sun. The Baltimore Touchdown Club gave him a courage award for his efforts.

In 2011, he enrolled at the University of Maryland in College Park with a major in broadcast journalism. He also became the student manager of the university?s men?s basketball team.
Then one day in early January, he noticed numbness in his left leg. An MRI showed another lesion in his brain. It was time to face another brain surgery.
His grandmother, Bobo, D-Howard County, recently wrote in a letter to supporters highlighting Zach?s words on Facebook.
?Found out that I?m getting surgery tomorrow," Bobo quoted Zach as saying. "Don?t want anybody to be worried, I?ll be fine. Another opportunity for me to prove myself worthy of this life. Blessed.??
Zach?s bout with childhood cancer galvanized the community when it first occurred, his former coach, Senisi, now the head Lacrosse coach at Howard Community College, said Sunday.?
At the time, supporters made meals for the family and sent Lederer hundreds of handwritten notes. Many were letters scrawled by children in crayon and marker that Lederer still keeps in a box under his bed at his Ellicott City home.
When friends and supporters heard last month the cancer had come back, they wanted to help again, and much of that motivation came from knowing and loving the guy that Lederer is, Senisi said.
That?s how ?Zaching? really took off, he said.
?People really kind of gravitate to him,? he added. ?If you spend time with him, he just blows your mind. There?s no agenda with him. ? He just wants to live his life.?
Those dedicated to helping survivors of cancer and other illnesses say Zach?s positive attitude, and the spread of ?Zaching? across the web, has inspired others facing challenges.
?He?s flexing in the camera to show he?ll be alright,? said Jordan Lawhead of Nashville, TN, who runs the website and organization Youinspire.org, which posts inspiring messages for those facing tough diagnoses, including cancer.
?Then it went out across the world,? Lawhead said. ?Yeah, we?re going to flex against fear and cancer and all the hopelessness it represents?. [Zach] is a shining example of an ?overcomer.? He really wants to go for it. He?s really living, and we?re so proud of him.?

My last posting concerned the background of how Massachusetts law deals with medical decision-making for incapacitated persons who need potentially invasive treatment that can have profound and permanent consequences. I noted that unlike many states, where the decisions may be left to a guardian to decide what is in a person's best interest, Massachusetts law requires a judge to step into the shoes of the incapacitated person and determine as best as possible what the incapacitated person would want if he were competent and able to voice an opinion. The law says an incapacitated person may be competent to make some decisions but not others. By law, the court is supposed to consider such variables as the likely outcomes with or without treatment, risk and benefit of the proposed treatment, whether the person has a supportive family and the impact on the person's family which may be caused by the proposed treatment if the person were competent, the person's religious beliefs and whether those beliefs would influence the person's decision-making if competent. The judge does not have to agree with the person's likely decision in order to make the substituted judgment -- after all, even persons of great intelligence and competency can make bad decisions about their health care -- but if the evidence points to a conclusion that the person would take a certain action if competent, then that's what the judge is supposed to order.
There is a long, sad history of forced sterilization being imposed in all fifty states on people without a hearing or any evidence presented other than the assumptions and prejudices of people with power. (A good example of this situation occurred in North Carolina, which is only now being settled.) While I am not aware of any statistics concerning the number of cases heard in the Probate Court concerning requests for sterilization and abortions for persons who are legally incapacitated, my sense based on discussions with colleagues who have a substantial guardianship practice suggests that these proceedings are now quite rare. (In 16 years of guardianship practice, I have only had one such case -- and the guardian decided not to go forward.)
In 1982, the Supreme Judicial Court extended the substituted judgment doctrine to reproduction, noting that "the personal decision whether to bear or beget a child is a right so fundamental that it must be extended to all persons, including those who are incompetent." The person potentially subject to such an order must be given adequate notice of the proceedings, an opportunity to be heard concerning whether whether she has the ability to give informed consent, a determination of substituted judgment if there is no such ability, and the right to appeal. The person is appointed specially-trained legal counsel to be sure that their constitutional rights are fully protected, and may receive funds from the court to hire an expert to advise on the necessity of the proposed procedure and provide testimony about the medical benefits and risks. A Guardian ad Litem is usually appointed to conduct an independent investigation of the facts and submit a written report. The judge is hold a hearing, weigh the evidence and make a detailed decision describing all the relevant facts, the substituted judgment criteria, and apply the facts to the law to determine if the person would want to be sterilized or have an abortion if they could make an informed decision.

On March 3rd 2012 my mother and I (also known as the Thicker Than Whatever Unstoppable Mother/Daughter Team) will be be co-facilitating a special love-filled workshop for kids who might be about to menstruate or who have started recently and for their mamas/main supporters called Love Overflow: Marvelous Menstruating Moment.? This will be a daylong intergenerational workshop at the new Eternal Summer space (aka the Greenhouse?where we grow!) with play, affirmation, storysharing and special spaces just for mamas and just for young folks to process their relationship to the physical, spiritual and social transformations going on at the ever-exciting time of puberty.
