Apple Senior VP of Hardware Engineering Bob Mansfield to retire, be replaced by Dan Riccio

Apple Senior VP of Hardware Engineering Bob Mansfield to retire, be replaced by Dan RiccioApple has announced that its Senior VP of Hardware Engineering, Bob Mansfield, will retire and over the course of the next few months transfer his role to Dan Riccio. Mansfield is credited with leading the Mac engineering team since 2005 and took on a more visible role as an exec during the reshuffling in 2008. He's also mentioned as leading iPhone and iPod engineering since 2010 (when he took over the role from Mark Papermaster in a move curiously timed around those antenna troubles) and the iPad since it began. He'd been with Apple since 1999 when it acquired his previous employer, Raycer Graphics, and most recently popped up on our radar earlier this year while integrating another acquisition, flash memory maker Anobit. If you'd like to get familiar with his replacement, Dan Riccio is currently vice president of iPad hardware engineering. Check the press release after the break for a few more details on both individuals, there's no word on Mansfield's post-retirement plans.

High court gives GOP new weapon on taxes

Republicans have seized on the Supreme Court's decision that the health insurance mandate is a tax, believing it will help them argue a second term for President Obama would be devastating for the economy.

Presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney employed the line of attack shortly after the ruling came down, asserting that ?ObamaCare raises taxes on the American people by approximately $500 billion.??

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), a top contender to be Romney?s running mate, drove home the point, arguing Obama has been freed to unleash an army of tax collectors on the public.

?If you do not buy health insurance, the IRS is going to be on your back and chasing you,? Rubio said.

The tactic of hitting Obama as a tax-raising liberal was used in the wake of an otherwise stinging defeat for conservatives at the hands of Chief Justice John Roberts and the court?s liberal wing.

In a 5-4 decision, Roberts ruled the mandate is a permissible use of Congress?s powers of taxation, upholding a law that conservatives fought as a breathtaking expansion of the federal government.?

But the ruling on the mandate also provided support for Republicans, who had long argued that the mandate was a tax increase in disguise.

Asserting that the mandate amounts to a tax hike is ?the most effective argument Republicans now have,? according to GOP strategist Ron Bonjean.

?[Obama] said, ?This is not a tax increase? and now, lo and behold, it is a tax increase. It is forcing you to buy insurance; otherwise your taxes will be raised.?

Bonjean said the taxation argument could help Romney ?win over independent voters in battleground states.??

Obama pushed back strongly against claims that the mandate constituted a tax back in 2009, when the passage of healthcare reform was fraught with political landmines for his party.?

?For us to say that you?ve got to take a responsibility to get health insurance is absolutely not a tax increase,? Obama said then.

Now the Supreme Court has validated his signature domestic achievement on the grounds that its core provision is, in fact, a tax.?

Republicans said the court?s ruling shows the healthcare law was rammed through Congress under false pretenses.

?Ironically, the Supreme Court has decided to be far more honest about ObamaCare than Obama was,? said Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R). ?They rightly have called it a tax.?

Supporters of the health law strongly dispute that it imposes a new tax burden on individuals. They say the $500 billion figure cited by Romney and others is composed almost entirely of other measures that are separate from the penalty that will be levied against most people who don?t buy insurance.

Democrats also note that the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office has projected that the law will reduce the federal deficit by more than $100 billion over the next decade.

Bob Shrum, who has worked at a high level of several Democratic presidential campaigns, dismissed the GOP tax argument as ?silly.??

?That?s the same thing they always say. It?s a tax increase only for those people who choose not to have health insurance. If you can?t afford health insurance, you will be subsidized.?

Obama himself made a similar argument Thursday when he addressed the Supreme Court decision from the East Room of the White House. He included a jab at Romney, who signed a state-level law with numerous similarities to the healthcare law while serving as governor of Massachusetts.?

Obama said that the mandate in question ?has enjoyed support from members of both parties, including the current Republican nominee for president.?

In a background briefing with a small group of reporters on Thursday, senior administration officials argued that the penalty was not a tax as the term is commonly understood, in part because they project that it will be levied on only about 1 percent of the population.?

One official also insisted that the system of tax credits built into the law would provide a tax break for most people.

But Republican strategist Ed Rollins maintained that Republicans needed to make the debate over the law ?a tax issue rather than a healthcare issue? if they are going to use it to their advantage this fall.

?It is a more sophisticated argument to make, but ultimately it will have some effect.?

Rollins said Democrats would face steep hurdles trying to push back against the ?new tax? argument.

?My sense is that when you raise the word ?tax? anywhere, it has an impact,? Rollins said.

Democratic pollster Mark Mellman disagreed. He said the Republican position was ?a ridiculous argument, and they know it. The only people who will pay [the penalty] are those who refuse to buy health insurance even at a subsidized rate.?

?It is surprising to find Republicans standing up for personal irresponsibility,? added Mellman, a columnist for The Hill.

Solid Advice For Dealing With Commercial Real Estate | Boca Raton ...

When selling a piece of commercial property, it is wise to ensure that you ask a realistic price. There are a lot of factors that determine the value of the lot.

At any given time, you should place your focus on only one investment. Whether you?d like to get involved in investing in commercial property, renting apartments or some other type of commercial investment, do yourself a favor, and choose just one investment to focus on. Each type of investment deserves your undivided attention. Start out with only one type of investment, and you will soon master it. This is much more profitable then having just a little experience with many types of real estate.

Try borrowing some of the tenets of feng shui for use with your properties. De-cluttering and open spaces are two key tenets, both of which are attractive to buyers.

Social media is an important tool for keeping brokers and investors appraised of your services. After completion of a transaction, you should work to cultivate an online presence.

Make certain to think about any sorts of environmental issues. For example, if the property you are considering has any hazardous waste material on it, or has in the past, that can cause problems. As a property owner, it is your responsibility to handle these issues, regardless of their origin.

Be mindful of the fact that all pieces of property have specific lifetimes. If you don?t realize that eventually you are going to have to put money into the property for maintenance or repairs, you will be very disappointed when that times and the associated bills come. Properties may need expensive repairs. For example, the electrical system may be faulty or out of date, or the roof may require replacement. Although every building needs maintenance and updating at some point, some need repairs and upgrades more often. It is important to formulate a long-term approach for managing these types of repairs.

Get a site checklist if you are viewing more than one property. Accept the proposal responses from the first round, but be sure to inform the property owners directly if you decide to go further in your inquiries. It will likely be to your advantage to informally mention that you are looking at more than one property. This could help you score a better deal.

Create your own blog or personal website where you can present yourself as an expert in your field. This is a great way to introduce people to your products and services and also which properties you have available for sale or leasing.

Before investing in commercial real estate, be sure that you find a financing option that is right for you. Don?t make the mistake of thinking that commercial lending is the same as residential lending. Some aspects of commercial loans are better than those of home loans. Commercial loans require a larger down payment, but you can avoid personal liability if the deal goes bad, and banks are more relaxed about allowing you to borrow some of your down payment money from a friend or partner.

Always include emergency maintenance on your list of need to know things. You should ask your landlord who is in charge of handling emergency repairs. Keep their numbers updated, and know how long it takes them to arrive on average. Create an emergency plan using your landlord?s information so that you can protect customer service and your reputation in case of a disruption to your usual business.

Establish an online presence before jumping into the market. Set up a website and profiles with various search engines and social networks. Try to learn about SEO to optimize your site. You want random people to find you through searching on search engines like google. This can increase your customers by a lot.

Net Operating Income, or NOI, is one of the most important metrics used in commercial real estate. You must understand what it means, and how it?s used. Success means that your income outweighs your operating costs.

Familiarize yourself with the performance metrics used by each firm. You will need to know how they select property criteria, what methods are used when negotiating and how they calculate how much square footage you will need. You can benefit a lot if you know things like this.

Whether you want to rent or lease, you will have to deal with pest control. It is even more important to look into the building?s pest control policies if you are looking to rent or lease in a region where building pests are common.

When you are selling a commercial property, always make sure to include all buyers; this includes local and non-local buyers. A lot of people do not think that people from out of town will want to buy their commercial real estate. Many private investors find it appealing to purchase properties that are affordably priced outside of their direct area.

Know what your goals are when you are purchasing commercial property. One important thing to have clear up front is whether you are thinking of using it for your personal business or if you, instead, want to lease out the property. As you prepare to seek out a new commercial property, you should first set very specific goals and requirements.

As previously mentioned, you may want to invest in the commercial real estate market for a variety of reasons. However, no matter what your reason may be, you need to be knowledgeable about the subject. Take the tips you learned here and apply them to your own commercial real estate endeavors. They will help you reach your goal of maximum profits.

Why Business-to-Business Advertising Is Increasingly Also Aimed at ...

Why Business-to-Business Advertising Is Increasingly Also Aimed at Consumers

Both B-to-B and Consumer Advertisers Hope to Have Their Ads Rub Off on Their Mainstream Products

By: Rance Crain

Have you noticed more predominantly consumer advertisers touting their ability to solve complex business problems? And, at the same time, business-to-business advertisers playing up their work for consumer products?

Both, I surmise, believe that their ads can rub off (in a very positive way) on their mainstream products, whether they be turbines or mobile phones.

Consumer marketers are seeking credibility in a commoditized world. AT&T might be best known for consumer phone service, but it also likes to demonstrate how it can use its technology to track business equipment. One of its commercials shows a bunch of semi-trailer with prefabricated homes and supplies moving in a caravan down a country highway.

The voice-over announcer explains that the chain of trucks is part of Genco Services in McAllen, Texas. ?In here, heavy-rental equipment in the middle of nowhere is always headed somewhere.? A computer screen shows a truck?s ID number, time of arrival and location. A guy in the field pulls out his cellphone and pushes a button ? and up comes a map with trucks arriving at the home office at that same time and location. ?AT&T created a mobile-asset solution to protect and track everything. So every piece of equipment knows where it is and how it?s doing and where it goes next,? the announcer says.

Another campaign, for GE, shows how the company?s industrial prowess brings other companies? consumer products to life. A TV spot features a guy who helps make turbines at its Schenectady, N.Y., plant and borrows consumer-ad techniques such as storytelling to show the worker up close and personal. ?When I was a kid, I wanted to work with my hands,? the worker tells us. ?That was my thing. I really enjoy building turbines. It?s nice to know that what you?re building is going to do something for the world.?

Then he switches to a product we can relate to. ?When people think about GE, they don?t think about beer. A lot of people may not realize that the power needed to keep their Budweiser cold and even to make their beer comes from turbines made right here.?

Cut to a local bar. ?So you guys make the beer?? a patron asks him. ?No, we make the power that makes the beer,? our GE worker says.

Today?s B2B marketers need to approach their business target as a person with a story to tell, not just a buyer of their products. That realization has had a profound effect on the creative approach ? B2B marketers don?t sell nuts and bolts anymore, they are more likely to emphasize emotional reasons for buying their products.

Bob Felsenthal, publisher of Crain?s BtoB magazine, doesn?t believe that B2B marketing has morphed into consumer marketing. What has changed, he says, is that the business prospect is now engaged on all types of content channels, so there?s a need for business communications to be relevant ?anywhere, anytime.? Social media makes any interaction a two-way conversation, and word-of-mouth is now much faster and potentially larger.

?But at the end of the day, B2B is still a very different messaging, sales cycle, language and feel than business-to-consumer marketing. Even if it has emotional pull and humor, it needs to be business-relevant as well. And often it needs real vertical industry understanding, context and messaging,? Bob told me.

When my father, G.D. Crain Jr., started Class, the forerunner of BtoB magazine, in 1916, he boasted in a ?why we are here? editorial: ?We don?t know a blooming thing about general mediums.?

Back then you didn?t need to know, because industrial advertising was distinct from consumer advertising. But today the same products often serve both B2B users and consumers, so advertising often plays dual roles as well.

Al Ries, a former president of the old Association of Industrial Advertisers, said since high-use products like personal computers, smartphones, printers and scanners are purchased by both business and consumer users, most companies prefer one campaign appealing to both.

Even with products sold primarily in the B2B marketplace, ad messages are being consumed in many places away from the offices, and B2B customers are seizing control of the conversation. ?Companies are getting amazing results by letting their customers do their marketing for them,? said Rob Fuggetta, CEO of Zuberance, an agency that helps marketers harness brand advocates on social media.

What?s more, B2B marketers are generating leads themselves on their own websites. Customer testimonials and webinars can be posted on YouTube. Spreadsheet templates, RFPs and catalogs can live on scribd.com. Frequently asked questions can be debriefed about a conference in an audio interview that becomes a podcast, consultant Paul Gillin told BtoB magazine.

Whether or not you agree that B2B and business-to-consumer marketing are coming closer together, B2B has come a long way since The National Industrial Advertising Association?s founding in 1922. The NIAA, now the Business Marketing Association, recently celebrated its 90th anniversary.

My dad and Keith Evans, advertising and sales promotion manager of steel distributor Joseph T. Ryerson & Co., were prime movers behind the NIAA formation. My dad said, ?There never was a clearer example of a need than the case of the National Industrial Advertising Association. All through the country industrial advertisers were groping for information, so they rallied to the colors, and it was not long before we had the largest advertising association in point of numbers in the world.?

Their numbers are still growing. BMA has 2,450 members, up 12% over last year. The association is expanding with conferences in Beijing and London, and Eduardo Conrado, senior VP-CMO at Motorola Solutions and chairman of BMA, sees marketers taking a broader role. ?For decades, marketers functioned in task-oriented roles ? product launches, lead generation and media hits,? he wrote in BMA?s 90th-anniversary program. ?But today we need a more strategic perspective that reflects the impact marketing has on the organization as a whole.? He sees the marketing function as ?the seamless conduit that connects everyone? in the company.

My dad and Keith Evans (whom my brother was named after) were best friends and did a lot more than cook up trade associations. Dad and Keith and their families (including my brother and me) would go fishing in Canada every summer, and I vividly recall Keith Evans cooking his famous fish chowder for our shore lunches. More than 50 years later, my wife, Merrilee, and I, along with Al Ries and his wife, Mary Lou, still enjoy those shore lunches and great bass fishing at the exact same spot

$1,500? That's a lot for some highfalutin' glasses, but we just couldn't resist. After wrapping up with the keynote, both myself and Darren Murph hopped in line and signed up for our very own pairs of Project Glass Explorer Edition devices. After completing a not-particularly-thorough sign-up process -- which, by the way, does not ask for a credit card -- those who agree to the terms of service receive an actual piece of glass with their number floating in the middle. This will match the serial number of the Project Glass device that will be shipped sometime next year. When will lucky numbers 782 and 788 be rolled? You can be sure you'll be first to know.

ABC's 'Glass House' not shattering any records

This June 18, 2012 photo released by ABC shows contestants Apollo, left, and Jeffrey are shown during the premiere episode of "The Glass House." After failing to stop the debut of ABC's "The Glass House," CBS tried another tactic against its competitor: sarcasm. CBS had argued in court that the ABC show is a copy of CBS' "Big Brother." On Wednesday, CBS issued a tongue-in-cheek release claiming it was developing a reality series called "Dancing on the Stars" _ a jab at ABC's "Dancing With the Stars." The mock series will air from the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles and feature what CBS called "moderately famous and sort of well-known people" who will compete by dancing on stars' graves, the network said. (AP) ? Now that ABC's "The Glass House" is on the air, it's hard not to wonder why CBS was so upset.

The ABC reality series debuted to just under 4 million viewers last week, placing it No. 63 in Nielsen's weekly rankings even in a quiet summer week. The Nielsen Co.'s preliminary ratings found that this Monday's second episode did even worse, reaching 3.3 million viewers.

CBS went to federal court to try to block ABC from showing the series, arguing it violated copyrights and trade secrets from its own "Big Brother." A federal court judge in Los Angeles rejected CBS' argument.

CBS may have been concerned about "The Glass House" stealing its thunder, since the 14th season of "Big Brother" doesn't debut until July 12. "The Glass House" is scheduled to run for only six weeks, if it lasts that long.

Last season, "Big Brother" averaged 8.3 million viewers, Nielsen said.

ABC still won last week's ratings competition, primarily because the last two games of the NBA Finals between Miami and Oklahoma City reached far more viewers than anything else on the air. While happy with the ratings, ABC had to be disappointed the series lasted only five games.

ABC averaged 6.4 million viewers in prime time last week (4.1 rating, 7 share). CBS was second with a 5.6 million (3.7, 7), NBC had 4.6 million (2.9, 5), Fox had 4.1 million (2.5, 4), ION Television had 1.1 million (0.7, 1) and the CW had 700,000 (0.5, 1).

Among the Spanish-language stations, Univision led with a 3.6 million viewer average in prime time (1.9, 3), Telemundo had 1.1 million (0.7, 1), TeleFutura had 510,000 (0.3, 0), Estrella had 190,000 and Azteca 90,000 (both 0.1, 0).

NBC's "Nightly News" topped the evening newscasts with an average of 7.5 million viewers (5.1, 11). ABC's "World News" was second with 6.9 million (4.7, 10) and the "CBS Evening News" had 5.6 million viewers (3.7, 8).

A ratings point represents 1,147,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 114.7 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given show.

For the week of June 18-24, the top 10 shows, their networks and viewerships: NBA Finals: Oklahoma City vs. Miami, Game 5, ABC, 18.46 million; NBA Finals: Oklahoma City vs. Miami, Game 4, ABC, 17.45 million; "America's Got Talent" (Monday), NBC, 11.43 million; "The Big Bang Theory," CBS, 8.38 million; "NCIS," CBS, 8.24 million; "60 Minutes," CBS, 8.22 million. "NCIS: Los Angeles," CBS, 7.42 million; "2 Broke Girls" (Thursday), CBS, 7.14 million; "America's Got Talent" (Tuesday, 9 p.m.), NBC, 7.04 million; "The Bachelorette," ABC, 7.04 million.

(AP) ? The jailed neighborhood watch volunteer charged with killing Trayvon Martin poses no threat to the community and should be released a second time on bail, his attorney said in a court motion released Monday

George Zimmerman's attorney asked that Zimmerman be granted bond for a second time as he awaits a second-degree murder charge in the 17-year-old Martin's shooting death during a confrontation in February in a gated community in Sanford, Fla. His attorney says Zimmerman isn't a flight risk and stayed in touch with law enforcement during his initial release on bail.

A judge will consider the request at a second bond hearing Friday.

Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty, claiming self-defense.

The neighborhood watch volunteer was granted a $150,000 bond last April but it was revoked earlier this month after prosecutors accused Zimmerman and his wife of misleading the court about how much money they had raised from donations to a website. Prosecutors say they had raised at least $135,000 from the website created by Zimmerman.

During the hearing, Zimmerman's wife, Shellie, testified that the couple had limited funds to use for bail since she was a fulltime nursing student and he wasn't working. Zimmerman did nothing to correct her as she testified by telephone due to safety concerns. Prosecutors say jailhouse calls between Zimmerman and his wife a few days before the hearing show the neighborhood watch volunteer instructing his wife on how to transfer funds raised by the website to her account.

Zimmerman's wife, Shellie, was later charged with making a false statement.

"Mr. Zimmerman's failure to advise the court of the existence of the donated funds at the initial bail hearing was wrong and Mr. Zimmerman accepts responsibility for his part in allowing the court to be misled as to his true financial circumstances," Zimmerman's attorney, Mark O'Mara wrote in the motion.

O'Mara also will ask Circuit Judge Kenneth Lester to reconsider his decision to make public all of Zimmerman's jailhouse calls and the statement of an unnamed witness. O'Mara said most of the calls aren't subject to the state's public records laws and the witness statement is irrelevant and could prejudice a potential jury.

Attorneys for two sets of media groups filed motions Monday arguing there was no need for the judge to reconsider his decision.

"There should be no further delay in the public's access to these public records," attorney Scott Ponce wrote in a motion for one media group that includes The Associated Press.

Give 3-D printing a try? Yoda says do it

15 hrs.

At some point in the not-too-distant future, we?ll all use 3-D printers to make new tools, replacement body parts?and dinner. In the meantime, early adopters are already giving the technology a try with downloadable blueprints for characters such as Yoda, that wise Jedi master of "Star Wars" fame.

The time-lapse?demonstration is courtesy of?YouTube user BusyBotz, who uses a commercial MakerBot Replicator 3-D printer?which costs?about $1,750. The 3-D model for Yoda is available from Thingiverse, a MakerBot-powered website where users share their digital designs.

The website aims to get people to share designs to feed into their 3-D printers, spreading the adoption of the technology, which MakerBot hopes will be widespread so they can sell more printers.

BusyBotz?s demonstration with Yoda showcases the fine detail available when the printer is set to build in 0.1 mm -high layer increments ? that is, Yoda is built up one 0.1 mm layer at a time.?

All things built with the 3-D printers are built layer upon layer.?

"There is a significant increase in detail compared to printing the same model at 0.2 mm," BusyBotz notes. ?It takes longer, but in a print like this, it is worth it.?

For those who view the full video below and think they might want to give one of?these nifty printers a try themselves, just remember this sage advice Yoda gives a young Luke Skywalker:

?Try not, do or do not, there is no try.?

(AP) ? A Louisiana-shot film that took top honors at this year's Sundance Film Festival returned to the state where it was made for a Hollywood-style, red-carpet premiere Monday night before opening in select theaters nationwide this summer.

The makers and stars of "Beasts of the Southern Wild" ? all newcomers to the big screen ? walked a red carpet at the Joy Theater on streetcar-lined Canal Street, hailing the New Orleans premiere as a long-awaited homecoming after media screenings across the country and at the Cannes Film Festival in France in May.

"This is what we dreamed about the whole time we were filming, bringing a finished film back to Louisiana," said the film's director and co-writer, Benh Zeitlin, a native New Yorker and one of only a handful affiliated with the film not from the Bayou State. "Coming back and seeing all this in New Orleans, now it feels real."

Zeitlin and company have been on a whirlwind tour promoting "Beasts," which stars Louisiana natives and uses the state's marshes and bayous to tell the mythical tale of a 6-year-old girl named Hushpuppy struggling to survive in the southern Delta with her ailing father as a storm approaches. The motherless young girl's world consists of a small but tightly-knit shantytown community on the bayou with wild animals, both real and imagined.

"Beasts" won the grand jury prize in the U.S. dramatic competition at Sundance as well as its cinematography award. At Cannes, where many U.S. films were shut out, Louisiana's indie darling won the Camera d'Or for best first film by director Zeitlin.

After a months-long search for the young girl who would ultimately play Hushpuppy, Zeitlin and producers found Quvenzhane (Kuh-VAHN-zuh-nay) Wallis of Houma, La., who was 6 at the time the movie was filmed in 2010. Now 8, she walked the red carpet Monday evening in a bright blue dress with rosettes and a satin sash tied at the back. She wore glittery silver slippers, diamond earrings and a big smile as she talked to reporters and posed for pictures with the other stars.

Her hair straightened and bangs pulled in a tight braid above her forehead, Quvenzhane bore little resemblance to the pants-wearing bushy-haired wild child she portrayed in "Beasts."

Dwight Henry, a New Orleans bakery owner hand-picked for the role of Hushpuppy's father, Wink, wore a black tuxedo with a bright red vest. Like his pint-sized co-star, he was all smiles as he shook hands with colleagues, posed for pictures and waved at onlookers ? some who honked their horns from the street.

"We've been all over the country, but this is what it's all about, bringing it back home," Henry said. "This is the moment I've been wanting to share with my family."

The film's success has been a boon for Louisiana, which sees more film activity than just about any other state outside the entertainment hubs of California and New York. But few films that hail from Louisiana have garnered as much acclaim recently.

"We are all filled with an immense amount of pride," said Michael Gottwald, one of the film's producers.

The Fox Searchlight film opens in select theaters nationwide this summer, starting with showings in Los Angeles and New York on Friday and then New Orleans area theaters on July 4.

Matt Kemp all but ruled out of All-Star game

By JANIE McCAULEY

Associated Press Sports

updated 8:23 p.m. ET June 25, 2012

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The Los Angeles Dodgers have all but ruled out injured slugger Matt Kemp for next month's All-Star game in Kansas City.

General manager Ned Colletti calls it a "long shot" for Kemp to play, with the outfielder still recovering from a strained left hamstring that landed him on the disabled list for a second time this season May 31. The 2011 NL MVP runner-up first missed time from May 14-29. Manager Don Mattingly is supportive if Kemp wants to participate in the Home Run Derby, as Los Angeles' medical staff has given him the go-ahead to do so.

Kemp said last week in Oakland he had discussed the Midsummer Classic with Mattingly and wants to make sure he is fully healthy for the second half with NL West-leading Los Angeles.

Research from University of Connecticut in the area of pancreatic cancer published

By a News Reporter-Staff News Editor at Medical Devices & Surgical Technology Week -- Investigators publish new report on Pancreatic Cancer. According to news reporting from Farmington, Connecticut, by NewsRx journalists, researchers stated "To investigate the inhibitory role of pterostilbene in pancreatic cancer, we conducted a genomic analysis of pterostilbene-treated pancreatic cancer cells. We also investigated the effect of pterostilbene upon the carcinogenic markers, manganese superoxide dismutase, cytochrome C, Smac/DIABLO, and STAT3 phosphorylation in vitro."

The news correspondents obtained a quote from the research by the authors from the University of Connecticut, "The antiproliferative effects of pterostilbene were further evaluated in an in vivo model. Pancreatic cancer cells were treated with pterostilbene and evaluated with DNA microarray analysis. Pterostilbene-treated cells were analyzed for cytochrome C, Smac/DIABLO, manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD)/antioxidant activity, and STAT3 phosphorylation using ELISA. Data were statistically analyzed using ANOVA. Pterostilbene was then administered to nude mice for 8 weeks, and tumor growth rates were recorded and statistically analyzed. Microarray analysis of pterostilbene-treated cells revealed upregulation of pro-apoptosis genes. In vitro, pterostilbene treatment altered levels of phosphorylated STAT3, MnSOD/antioxidant activity, cytochrome C, and Smac/DIABLO. In nude mice, oral pterostilbene inhibited tumor growth rates. Pterostilbene alters gene expression in pancreatic cancer and increases the antiproliferative markers cytochrome C, Smac/DIABLO, and MnSOD/antioxidant activity. It was also shown to inhibit phosphorylated STAT3, a marker of accelerated tumorigenesis, and decrease pancreatic tumor growth in vivo."

According to the news reporters, the researchers concluded: "Further studies are warranted to elucidate the effects of pterostilbene in humans."

For more information on this research see: Genomic Analysis of Pterostilbene Predicts Its Antiproliferative Effects Against Pancreatic Cancer In Vitro and In Vivo. James Pethokoukis Smacks Down Eleanor Clift: GOP Isn't 'Anti-Immigration' - 'That's Just Wrong'

A common media deception is to accuse Republicans of being anti-immigration.

When Newsweek's Eleanor Clift tried this on PBS's McLaughlin Group Friday, US News & World Report's James Pethokoukis quickly scolded, "They?re anti-illegal immigration. They?re not anti-immigration...That?s just wrong" (video follows with transcribed highlights and commentary):

During a discussion about President Obama's recent edict concerning young illegal immigrants not being deported, Clift said of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, "If he?s elected president, he will be leading a party that is largely anti-immigration."

Pethokoukis pounced, "No, I think they?re anti-illegal immigration. They?re not anti-immigration. They?re not anti-immigration. That?s a talking point. They?re pro-immigration. That?s just wrong."

Yes, it is just wrong, but you can't swing a dead cat in this country without hitting a liberal media member such as Clift making this dishonest claim.

Fortunately for Friday's viewers there was a conservative on the set to correct her for all too often there isn't and the offending party gets to make his or her talking point without challenge.

This deceit has been going on for years and it's high time the media get their facts straight on this controversial issue.

Or is that asking too much?
