A long convoy of vehicles headed for the Lopinot Mountains last Wednesday.

The vehicles bearing a cargo of people arrived before noon to meet in friendly rivalry in a number of sporting disciplines.

Tents lined the eastern periphery of the Lopinot Recreation Grounds and those arriving took up residence under tents assigned to the various steelbands.

It was a day when steelbands ?clashed?? in sports, not Panorama and steelband festivals.

There was a colourful contingent from Birdsong Steelband and their March pass presentation was a complete show.

There were three young men in their line-up looking like James Brown, that popular American soul singer of the 1960s.

They danced to Calypso Rose?s ?Fire Fire in Mih Wire Wire??.

Courts Sound Specialists and Defence Force teams gave a good showing of their marching, dancing skills.

Solo Harmonites danced to Nancy Sinatra?s ?Boots are Made for Walking.??

In fact, the theme of the sports day was ?Back to the 60s?? featuring musical hits of the 1960s.

Member of the CAL Invaders Steelband and Fire Services brought the march pass segment of the sports day to a close.

And when it was time to engage in real sports like windball cricket, small goal football, table tennis, draughts, over-40 football, the rains came and ?Wash out mas in May??.

Then everybody huddled under tents waiting, watching, hoping. Then suddenly the sun peeped out. The overcast conditions was certainly ideal for sports.

A table full of shiny trophies awaiting claimants who won in the various sports.

Over the past decade, sports within the steelband fraternity were held at various venues around the country.

?This is to encourage friendship and unity among bands and people,?? said Roger Simpson, public relations officer of St James Tripolians.
?It?s nice when all the bands could come together. Kudos to the organisers,?? said Simpson.

Even Skiffle Bunch journeyed all the way from San Fernando to Lopinot.

The resident DJs at the recreation ground and nearby bar kept up a lively tempo.

And when darkness descended on the Lopinot Village, people headed for the neighbouring Surrey Village, where they awaited the arrival of Rikki Jai to perform at their Indian Arrival Day celebrations.

The traffic crawled through the village as the crowd assembled at the Surrey Village Community Center Grounds to witness a colourful concert.

The El Dorado Tassa Drummers opened the proceedings with some lively drumming, inviting people to indulge in dancing.

Dancers from the Nritya Sangam Dance Company of Las Lomas gave a fine display of their dancing skills.

They whipped up a storm with mixture of Bharat Natyam, Kathak ,Bollywood and Chutney styles.

DJ Junior?s music was a delight. Coming in from the Lopinot Village, he outclassed his DJ pals who had provided music at the sports earlier in the day.

The village calypsonian ?Uncle Benji?? sang a number as the crowd grew larger and larger, with people spilling onto the roadway.

The resident village steelband, Supernovas gave qfine sampling of their musicianship under the guidance of arranger Amrit Samaroo.

Then Rikki Jai brought the curtains down on the celebrations with a medley of songs from his rich repertoire.

And when the show ended, everybody departed for ?home sweet home??.
