Unbeaten Falcons still top AP Pro32 power rankings
NEW YORK (AP) ? Still unbeaten, still No. 1 in the AP Pro32 NFL power rankings.
The Atlanta Falcons easily retained the top spot following a convincing win at Philadelphia, with the New York Giants edging the Houston Texans for second place in the latest rankings.
The league's only undefeated team received nine first-place votes and 319 points Tuesday from 10 of the 12 media members on The Associated Press panel reporting their ballots.
The Giants had the other first-place vote and 303 points, two more than the third-place Texans as the top seven teams held steady from a week ago.
Indianapolis made the biggest move, advancing eight spots to No. 16 after a win over Tennessee. Miami, Detroit and Tampa Bay each moved up seven spots. The Dolphins are 11th, the Lions 14th, and the Buccaneers 19th.
San Diego and New Orleans took the biggest tumbles, each dropping six places ? the Chargers to 22nd, the Saints to 23rd.
After Matt Ryan threw for 262 yards and three touchdowns in Atlanta's 30-17 over the Eagles, the voters were raving about the Falcons.
"Most impressive win of the year. Over 50 percent of 7-0's make the Super Bowl," said ESPN's Chris Berman.
"Crushing Philadelphia after the Eagles' bye convinced me: No one is better," said CBSSports.com's Clark Judge.
"Those Matt Ryan MVP chants are getting louder, and with good reason," said the Tampa Tribune's Ira Kaufman.
The Giants, who blew a 23-point lead but hung on to beat Dallas 29-24, are still tops with one voter, who took things a few steps further.
"How would an Eli Manning-Peyton Manning Super Bowl strike you?" asked the Chicago Tribune's Dan Pompei.
The Texans had a week off, but head into Week 9 at 6-1, the best record in the AFC. Buffalo visits on Sunday.
"The Texans win their division by the first of December," said Judge, who voted Houston third behind Atlanta and Chicago. "I haven't seen a race this easy to call since Secretariat ran the Belmont."
Speaking of horses, the Colts galloped past a bunch of teams following a 19-13 overtime win over the Titans. Voters are actually talking playoff possibilities.
"More Andrew Luck magic, this time with the winning touchdown pass in OT as Indy's resurgence continues. Wild card contender? Could be," said Newsday's Bob Glauber, who had the Colts 17th.
"This is a fact that shouldn't be taken lightly ? the Colts (4-3) are legitimately the second-best team in the AFC South," said Foxssports.com's Alex Marvez.
Miami, too, earned praise after a 30-9 romp over the New York Jets.
"Dolphins coach Joe Philbin is doing a remarkable job," said Fox Sports' John Lynch. "On Sunday, he lost his outstanding rookie QB Ryan Tannehill, but the Dolphins still beat up the Jets for their third straight victory."
Watch out for Denver, too. Peyton Manning and the Broncos improved to eighth this week after a third straight win.
"Manning and the passing game finding their groove along with that defense. Watch out!" said CBS Sports/Sirius XM's Rich Gannon.
The Saints, meanwhile, fell to 2-5 and are losing any support they had after two straight wins.
"How bad is the Saints defense ? 50 yards worse than anyone else in the league. The Saints are allowing 474 yards per game," said the Dallas Morning News' Rick Gosselin.
Kansas City is 32nd and last.
"The Chiefs are not good!" said Lynch.

Denver family's Halloween house scares the bejesus out of people
Ever wonder what it might be like to live in a real haunted house?
Mark Collester and Jennifer Luevano have some idea.
And you thought parenthood was scary?
Along with Luevano?s two sons, ages 8 and 15, and a half-dozen familial recruits, this clan of gore fans transforms the yard around their little brick house in north Denver into a spooky neighborhood attraction that has been scaring the bejesus out of even the coolest Halloween revelers.
Mmm, brains.
?I know we had someone pee his pants last night,? Collester says during a daylight tour of his frightful yard. ?Tomorrow (on Halloween), the line will be down the block!?
What began as a fun family tradition ?that gets worse and worse each year,? Collester says, has become a fundraiser for a nearby school, Trevista at Horace Mann. A member of the school?s Parent Teacher Organization collects a $1 admission and a can for Food Bank of the Rockies.
After being open just one night, the family had collected a storage tub full of food donations.
That admission is peanuts for the barrel of spooks Collester and Luevano have in store for their visitors, who enter through a creaky gate covered with spider webs and creepy-crawlies before arriving in a front yard populated by monsters and killers. Follow a scary path around the house, past dismembered body parts and baby goblins and through a spooky twisted forest. Then guests arrive in a demented butcher?s lair where the only escape is through a bloody (cutout) refrigerator and a gore-covered bathroom.
Jennifer Luevano peeks through the bloody, cut-through refrigerator near ?the butcher?s room? at the haunted house in the yard outside of her real house. Luevano?s boyfriend, Mark Collester, and friends begin constructing the popular neighborhood attraction weeks before Halloween.
All of this is staffed by relatives who make up a motley cast that includes a werewolf, a ?dead bather,? a live skeleton, a butcher and, Luevano says, ?We have the little one inside the cage.?
(The little one is a pint-sized relative who acts like a zombie kid inhabiting a broken-down old reptile cage.
Where do all the props come from? The trees for the twisted forest were salvaged from a defunct community theater, Collester says. A construction worker by trade, he builds this outdoor maze. Many of the decorations ? especially those that move and speak ? are scored during post-Halloween sales. And the rest? ?We?re CraigsList fanatics!?

Care home scandal: Poor care providers will face corporate legal ...
Liberal Democrat MP and former care services minister Paul Burstow has spoken out against negligent care providers, saying that in future they should face corporate legal sanctions if they fail in their duty of care to residents.
Mr Burstow was speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today programme yesterday morning after it was revealed that 19 of 51 former patients moved from a negligent care home in Bristol have been flagged again for safeguarding issues.
The Winterbourne View care home in Bristol was engulfed in national controversy after a BBC Panorama investigation revealed shocking abuses of patients with learning difficulties recorded on hidden cameras.
The programme highlighted sickening abuse, including hitting, unorthodox restraint, hair pulling and examples of patients' mouths being held open whilst medication was forced down their throats. In another chilling episode, a female patient was showered fully clothed and then had mouthwash poured into her eyes.
Abuse at the home got so bad that one patient attempted to throw themselves from a second floor window. When their attempt failed staff mocked them.
The abuses sparked criminal investigations, which resulted in the prosecution of 11 members of staff, who were jailed last week in sentences ranging from two and a half years to six months.
Mr Burstow highlighted the fact that the home's owners, Castlebeck, were charging some ?3,500 per week per resident for the care services they provided, and believes that in future such companies should face corporate legal sanctions for their failings.
"(The Government) needs to make sure that the companies that take the money - if they fail, and in this case they more than failed, they really abused people - then they need to be held corporately accountable, as well as the staff who stood in the dock last week" he said.
Corporate manslaughter
At the moment, companies can only be charged for neglect in cases where someone they owed a duty of care to dies. The Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007 brought in this criminal offence.
The Act came into force in April 2008, and was instigated in response to public outcries following disasters that were later shown to be the result of corporate negligence.
The first successful prosecution under the Act came last February when Cotswold Geotechnical Holdings were successfully charged with manslaughter over the death of geologist Alexander Wright. The company was fined ?385,000 after the judge found that their approach was irresponsible and dangerous.
A new crime of corporate willful negligence?
In the case of Castlebeck and the Winterbourne View home, Mr Burtow believes that a new offence of corporate willful neglect could help by imposing serious financial penalties on companies who profit from the abuse of those they own a duty of care towards.
"We have corporate manslaughter on the statute book. I think there is now a case for corporate wilful neglect as well" he told the Today programme.

Movie Review: 'Fun Size' ? CBS Philly

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) ? Early on, the film?s setting, Cleveland, is described as the ?mistake by the lake.? So let?s dub this dreadful comedy a ?mistake in every take.?
The huge difference between fun size and fun is vividly demonstrated by Fun Size, a bargain-basement teen comedy that?s short on size and fun.
Wait, did I say teen comedy?? Yes, because that?s what it turns out to be.
But although the script is aimed at teens and is consumed with particular teenage concerns (even though? it lives at the far edge of its PG-13 border where R beckons and renders much of its humor inappropriate), it reaches out to children and is being sold as a family film.

It?s not.
The PG-13 is for ?crude and suggestive material, partying, and language.? And yet it?s being marketed as a Halloween-night comedy:? of course tweens and young children will want to see it.
That?s why so much of the profanity and sexual references, however mild, seem inappropriate for the target audience. The disconnect between content and marketing is gaping.
It?s set throughout Halloween night, as teens party and youngsters go out trick-or-treating.
Victoria Justice plays Wren, a sardonic high school senior who narrates and is looking forward to going off to college ?- NYU, her recently deceased father?s alma mater, is where she?s headed ? so that she can get away from her dysfunctional family.
When she?s invited to a Halloween party by Aaron, the guy she has a crush on (Thomas McDonell), she is understandably upset when her mother (Chelsea Handler) tells her to take her little brother, Albert (Jackson Nicoll), trick-or-treating while she goes out with her much younger boyfriend.
Wren goes to the party instead, where she promptly loses track of Albert, who disappears among the many costumed trick-or-treaters out on the street.
So she borrows a car and heads out along with her best friend, April (Jane Levy), as well as two guys, Peng (Osric Chau) and Roosevelt (Thomas Mann), the latter a debate captain who has a huge crush on her, to find her younger brother.
What this movie is doing on theatre screens is mystifying: it plays like an episode of a middling television series that doesn?t even exist.
Josh Schwartz, the debuting director who created such TV series as ?Gossip Girl? and ?The O.C.,? also served as one of the producers, working from a script by Max Werner that?s strained and unfunny from the get-go and burdened with a severe case of the cutes.
If there is a moment of recognizable reality in character or circumstance, I missed it.? To take one glaring example among many: when a child goes missing, just about everyone reacts as if it were a misplaced utensil.
Some teens may relate to the situation, but most will recognize that something about the whole enterprise is just out of whack.
So we?ll wear a costume of 1? stars out of 4 for the misadventure-in-babysitting misfire, Fun Size, a wrongheaded trick and a tasteless treat.

Obama talks Trump, debates, baseball on 'Tonight'
BURBANK, Calif. (AP) ? What's real estate mogul Donald Trump got against President Barack Obama? The president says it's an old grudge that goes back ? way, way back ? to their childhood days in Kenya.
"We had constant run-ins on the soccer fields," Obama told "Tonight Show" host Jay Leno during a tongue-in-cheek knock on Trump Wednesday night. "He wasn't very good and resented it. When we finally moved to America, I thought it would be over."
Trump became a leading voice in the "birther" movement, the discredited but very much alive conspiracy theory that Obama was actually born outside of the U.S. and isn't constitutionally eligible to be president. Earlier Wednesday, Trump offered to donate $5 million to the president's charity of choice if he would release his college and passport records.
Wisecracks aside, Obama told Leno that he has never actually met Trump.
When Leno asked Obama if he was glad the presidential debates are over, the president responded, "You know, I was sort of getting the hang of it." Obama, whose performance in the first debate was widely panned, said he didn't do an effective job of energetically outlining the contrast of visions between him and Republican Mitt Romney.
Part of the problem with a debate, Obama said, is that it's not a natural way of communicating ? having an argument with someone as you sit next to him.
"Well," Leno said, "you're married."
Obama shot back: "But the difference is, with Michelle, I just concede every point."
Asked which team he was backing in the World Series, the Detroit Tigers or the San Francisco Giants, Obama managed to get in a dig at Romney: "I will say, I've spent a lot of time in Detroit lately, and I didn't want to let go Detroit go bankrupt. So in this particular World Series, I might be a little partial."

Is the George Washington Bridge a work of art?

Happy 81st Birthday, George Washington Bridge! The French architect Le Corbusier reportedly said you are ?the most beautiful bridge in the world? ? you ?gleam in the sky like a reversed arch.? But are you really a work of art?

The designer Othmar H. Ammann certainly was conscious of the need to make beautiful bridges. In 1958 he wrote: ?Economics and utility are not the engineer?s only concerns. He must temper his practicality with aesthetic sensitivity. His structures should please the eye. In fact, an engineer designing a bridge is justified in making a more expensive design for beauty?s sake alone.?
Apart from its obvious elegance, I think that the George Washington Bridge (GWB) is notable perhaps for four reasons. First, at 3,500 feet it was nearly twice the span of the longest bridge at the time ? the Ambassador Bridge at 1,850 feet. Second, Ammann was able to make huge cost savings by reducing the estimates of live load (i.e. due to traffic and trucks etc.) and relying on a relatively new so called ?deflection theory? to design the bridge. Third, the bridge was built during the Great Depression, but there wasn?t enough money ? a cause of a change in appearance because the now famous steel towers were due to be faced in concrete and stone. Fourth, Ammann designed the bridge so that it could be added to, though that didn?t come about until 1962. With its 14 lanes of traffic it is now one of the busiest bridges in the world.
Given later events such as the collapse of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge ? the famous ?galloping Gertie? which Ammann actually investigated ? one could argue that Ammann?s design was ?brave?. Large changes from what has gone before, as at Tacoma, can be challenging. It is interesting therefore that as a young man Ammann made his name early by writing a report on another famous bridge disaster ? the Quebec Bridge that collapsed during construction in 1907. At the time the Quebec Bridge was also to be a very large span at 1800 feet, rivalled only by the Forth Railway Bridge in Scotland with main spans of 1710 feet and built in 1890. Ammann would have seen and learned how the many errors in the design and execution led to the downfall of Quebec. He would have contrasted that experience so strongly with the way Sir Benjamin Baker and Sir John Fowler took meticulous care with the Forth after they had witnessed the collapse of the Tay Bridge in Scotland in 1879. I suspect that he learned much from those experiences.
Suspension bridges are complex because the flow of forces in the structure is not easily calculated; engineers call them statically indeterminate. Only now with large computers can we model their behaviour with any confidence. Ammann was taught in Zurich at ETH by Wilhelm Ritter, the engineer who laid the basis for the new, but still rather approximate, deflection theory in 1877. Indeed Ritter taught arguably two of the greatest bridge designers of the early 20th century, Ammann and Robert Maillart, who was responsible for some beautifully elegant early reinforced concrete bridges in Switzerland including the world famous Salginatobel Bridge near Schiers. Ritter?s influence on two of his most accomplished pupils is clear in their work. Ritter emphasised the importance of visualising the flow of forces in the bridge and its relationship with aesthetics. Josef Melan improved the new deflection theory in 1888 and Leon Moisseiff used it to design the Manhattan Suspension Bridge in 1908. The theory was so-named because it took account of the deflections of the structure under live loads (i.e. the moving traffic, etc.). Moisseiff was confident that the theory was accurate but he later was to design Tacoma Narrows.
Perhaps Ammann was more aware of its limitations than some commentators, such as Henry Petroski, have intimated. He knew that the theory was based on quite severe simplifying assumptions. Darl Rastofer has written that Ammann was a reserved, self-effacing, and meticulous man, but one with a quiet inner confidence that meant he could hold his own. He was as comfortable at dealing with detail as well as taking an overview. Like others before him such as Thomas Telford at Menai Bridge in North Wales, Baker and Fowler at Forth, Ammann used theory. But unlike Theodore Cooper at Quebec and Sir Thomas Bouch at Tay, perhaps he was very careful to check and control the detail. I suspect that he was diligent in making sure he understood the flow of forces even if he knew he couldn?t calculate them precisely. I suspect that is why he went on to be so successful in leaving his mark on New York City with five major bridges that bear so much of the traffic flow to and from the city, and with his help on the high profile Golden Gate in San Francisco.

So is the GWB a work of art? Art is difficult to define but we can say it is a power of the practical intellect, the ability to make something of more than ordinary significance. Is the GWB an extraordinary bridge? Did Ammann achieve aesthetic sensitivity? He certainly achieved practicality; no-one can fail to be impressed. Le Corbusier liked it, so that is good enough for most of us. But of course Le Corbusier was a modernist, so he liked functionality; for example he saw buildings ?as machines for living in?. All in all I think it is no accident that suspension bridges are some of the most beautiful structures we see around us. The graceful curves of the cables are the defining feature and they are entirely natural structures. They are the best examples of harmonious form and function. The GWB is one of the best as was Othmar Ammann.

AT&T says it saw 4.7 million iPhone activations for the three months ending September 30, 2012. Eighteen percent were new to AT&T. Due to supply constraints a ?vast majority of third-quarter iPhone sales going to existing customers to satisfy pent-up demand.? Verizon activated 3.1 million iPhones.
AT&T says that it added a total of 678,000 net wireless subscribers during the three months ending September 30, 2012 . It also reported 4.7 million iPhone activations, with 18?percent new to AT&T.?Due to supply constraints, the company says that a ?vast majority of third-quarter iPhone sales [were] going to existing customers to satisfy pent-up demand.? Verizon in comparison activated 3.1 million iPhones. AT&T says that during the quarter it saw smartphone sales of 6.1 million and now has a postpaid smartphone customer base of 44.5 million, up 1.4 million from second quarter 2012.

Wall St slips after tepid earnings and steady Fed
NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks ended lower for a second day on Wednesday, as investors soured on another round of underwhelming corporate results and the Federal Reserve said it would stick to its stimulus plan until the job market improves.
The S&P 500 has lost 3.6 percent over the past five sessions, hurt by weak earnings outlooks and top-line revenue misses from large multinational companies. The index is now down 3.9 percent from its closing high of 1,465.77 set on September 14.

The Fed, in its latest policy statement, said it would keep buying $40 billion in mortgage-backed debt per month to keep interest rates low until the job picuture gets better.
"Unemployment is staying where it is, new jobs are minimal, and the Fed is staying defensive," said Allan Flader, financial advisor at RBC Wealth Management, in Phoenix. "I would be surprised if they went to a neutral stance any time soon. You need to see more credible increases in employment, and it's just not happening yet."
On September 13, the Fed unveiled a third round of economic stimulus, or quantitative easing, known as QE3.
The Dow Jones industrial average shed 25.19 points, or 0.19 percent, to 13,077.34 at the close. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index dropped 4.36 points, or 0.31 percent, to 1,408.75. The Nasdaq Composite Index slipped 8.77 points, or 0.29 percent, to end at 2,981.70.

Imminent Windows 8 launch blamed for Microsoft revenue slide
Microsoft has blamed the slowdown in the PC market ahead of its Windows 8 launch for the profit and revenue decline announced in its first-quarter results.
For the three months to 30 September, Microsoft saw net profit tumble 22 per cent year on year to $4.47bn (?2.78bn) on sales that fell eight per cent to $16bn.

TNW: Statistics show that female entrepreneurs are lagging behind their male counterparts.? Have you seen a similar pattern in your interactions with up and coming entrepreneurs? ?
CP: In my work with Oxford Entrepreneurs, it was always a huge struggle to get more female entrepreneurs.?
However, what I found is that women are just more cautious than men, they take a bit more time to consider what they want, but when they decide, they really go for it and are very committed.?
Whereas some guys think 'let?s just try it out'.??
TNW: What advice do you have for an aspiring female entrepreneur??
CP: Just try out ? there?s no real risk involved.?Even if you run a business and you fail, if you did everything well, it will look good on your resume because investors will think you?ve learnt something from it.?
Also, be sure to look up other successful female entrepreneurs and ask them any concerns you may have.?
Entrepreneurs embrace a pay it forward philosophy and are more willing to help than corporate counterparts. You need go out there and get all the help you can.?
TNW:?You have a good female user base in Italy, why do you think that?s the case??
CP: I think it?s because of the social nature of our platform. In general, the platform appeals to a lot of women because it allows them to utilise the time they have for lunch and meet new people. Women are more open to that.?
TNW:?So tell me, what can Letslunch do for me??

Meatless Monday: Hungarian Portabella Paprikash | Devour The ...
Paprikash sounds pretty elaborate but it just means paprika in Hungarian. It?s a Hungarian stew of meat ? usually chicken ? cooked with paprika, peppers and often sour cream, that gets served with egg noodles. Because it?s typically made with meat I hadn?t ever had it ? I gave up meat long before I heard of such a thing called Paprikash; it wasn?t exactly in my mom?s weeknight dinner repertoire in my early meat-eating days. But Rachael Ray uses portabella mushrooms to make her paprikash, so it?s completely veg-friendly. Plus I?m obsessed with smoked paprika, so any recipe that calls for it is on my must-make list. You can substitute sweet paprika in this recipe, but go for the smoked; it makes a huge difference.
Hungarian Portabella Paprikash
2 large red mild frying peppers or red bell peppers
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
8 large portabella mushroom caps, gills scraped, wiped clean and chopped into bite-size pieces
2 Fresno chile peppers, thinly sliced
1 large onion, chopped
1 carrot, peeled and chopped or grated
4 large cloves garlic, sliced
2 tablespoons sweet paprika or smoked sweet paprika
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
1/4 cup tomato paste
2 cups vegetable stock
1 cup dry white wine
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
8 ounces wide egg noodles or 1 pound egg tagliatelle
2 tablespoons butter
1/4 cup chopped fresh chives, parsley, or dill
Sour cream, as needed
Char the peppers on the stovetop or under the broiler with the oven door cracked for the steam to escape. Place the charred peppers in a bowl and cover with plastic wrap to cool. Scrape or peel the skin from the peppers, then seed, and thinly slice.
Heat 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil in a large Dutch oven or large, deep skillet over medium-high heat. Add the mushrooms and brown 12 to 15 minutes until darkened and tender. Add the Fresno peppers, onion, carrot, garlic, paprika, salt, and pepper, and cook to soften, 10 minutes more.
Add the tomato paste to the vegetables and stir 1 minute. Add the stock, wine, Worcestershire sauce, and roasted red peppers. Simmer a few minutes for the flavors to combine, then cool completely and store for make-ahead meal.
Reheat the mushrooms and sauce over medium heat, stirring occasionally.
In boiling salted water, cook the egg noodles or egg pasta to al dente and toss with butter and herbs.
Stir a few spoonfuls of sour cream into the paprikash and serve in shallow bowls on a bed of noodles or pasta.

Make it: Drop Cloth to Curtains | Goodsmiths
I recently?revamped our spare bedroom into?a room for our 14-month-old, since we are quickly expecting our second child in a couple weeks. Of course I was on a tight budget and needed to cut cost anywhere I could, but I wanted to?make it a cute-and-fun environment so my son would like to sleep there! I love the look of bold stripes on curtains and lamps ? but holy money bags they are expensive and hard to come by! Thankfully, one day I was watching The Nate Berkus Show, and he had an awesome demonstration on how to paint painter?s drop cloth and make them into curtains. I tried it, and they turned out fabulous! I couldn?t be happier. And as an added bonus, is there is NO SEWING involved in this project!
What you will need:
- Painters drop cloth canvas
- Painters tape
- Paint brush, foam brush or small roller ? whatever you prefer
- Paint
- Tape measure/ ruler
- Scissors
- Curtain rod
- Curtain hangers
I found the drop cloth canvas at Home Depot or Lowe?s, but it could be found at any home improvement store along?with painters tape, foam brush and paint. Drop cloths come in various sizes, mostly in white or off-white colors. Before going to the store, take ?measurements of your window?s height and width. Determine how long you want your curtains based on the measurements (I would suggest making the curtains floor-length), and make sure you purchase a canvas that covers the whole height.?Most curtains come in lengths of 63 or 84 inches, which I would say would be standard for what your window would measure.?For the paint,?I purchased a sample color for about $3 from Lowe?s to save money. It turned out to be the perfect amount.
First I washed the canvas and dried on a low heat. Once dry, I laid the canvas out flat and took a warm iron to get the kinks and curls out. Next, I measured and taped off my stripes, which?were two inches wide with four inches of white space. But you could create any size or design you like.
Once complete with measurements, start painting!?Be sure to have something laidout underneath the convas because the paint may bleed through, depending on the pressure you use when painting.?When the paint is dry, you can cut the canvas down the middle. It is best to do the cutting after you have painted the stripes or designs so they meet up properly when hung.
Lastly, hang the?finished product. I simply folded over the top a couple times to create a hem, and clipped on the hangers. Mood Mate: Great Mental Health App, Could We Get One Like It ...
Sometimes the time for an app has just come.
Launched on World Mental Health Day?on October 10, a new mental health app already has?more than 1,500 downloads and a #3 ranking among free Health & Fitness apps?and, lest we forget, a mention on Twitter by none other than Alistair Campbell, Tony Blair?s former spokesman who now campaigns on mental health.
It?s got the properly British name of Mood Mate, as the application comes out of the University of Reading, where researchers are studying whether an iOS app could, as they write, ?help people with low mood and anxiety to find and seek local treatment.?
And after all my beefs about mental health apps not being backed up by research (see ?We Know There?s an App For That?But Often Research Lags Behind Mobile Mental Health App?Claims?),?this app continues the research even as it is being utilized.
Alex Gyani, a researcher at the University of Reading Department of Psychology, devised a way for people to use an app?and for research data to be gleaned from it at the same time.
Mr Gyani said: ?Having a randomised [forgive the spelling; he's a Brit] controlled trial built into an app that is available on the iTunes store is a fantastic way to conduct research ? and the more participants we can recruit, the more we will learn.?That?s why an app is such a great way to conduct a trial like this one.?
He continues, ?We hope it will enable us to find new ways to help people suffering from mental health problems in the UK get the psychological treatments that have been shown to work.?
So users of the app become subjects when they download it. People are only eligible to be part of the study?although given the number of downloads, seems like people who are not officially part of the study find the app useful, as well?if they?re suffering from anxiety or low mood.
The study is structured so that two-thirds of those who download the app are asked to monitor their moods for 30 days and are given information about where to find local services where they can receive mental health help, without going through a GP, the equivalent of a primary care physician.
In a really cool move, the treatments recommended are part of the National Health Service?s ?Improving Access to Psychological Therapies initiative, or IAPT, on which the government has spent ?400 million since 2007,?and are therefore free. [Can you see this happening in the States? Free medical care for mental health? Seems like that could be a big part of the holdup in getting a similar app here Stateside.]
The remaining third just get the information about where to find services without monitoring mood.
The point, you might ask? Researchers are trying to determine whether monitoring mood encourages people to seek out treatment.

Mood Mate would certainly have to be tweaked to fit into an American approach to medicine (and lose the word ?mate,? as well, I?m sure)?but it doesn?t seem all that hard, if someone takes an interest. Well, maybe if you cut out that offering free services, too.
What an utterly unAmerican idea.

To lust after one?s brother or not to lust after one?s brother? That is the question. Dexter fans all over the web want to know whether Deb still has romantic feelings for Dex, whether he?s actively seducing his sister to prevent her from turning him in, and whether bathing in a tub of blood necessarily has erotic undertones or is just a super-creepy way to unwind after work.
Commenter Helen Love thinks Laura and I underestimate the prevalence of incest, though OskarS defends the Westermarck Effect, which suggests that young children growing up in close proximity?even if they?re not related?don?t feel sexual attraction for each other: ?Certainly, there are exceptions?but the Westermarck Effect is most definitely a real thing, it has very solid scientific support, and such exceptions are exceedingly rare. And it does indeed apply to Deb and Dex (especially Deb, since she was younger than Dex when they were brought together),? Oskar writes. Josh Miller chimes in with the not-entirely-welcome observation that the two characters may in fact share the same father, thanks to Harry Morgan?s involvement with a confidential informant who later becomes Dexter?s mom. Ami is less concerned with science but declares Deb an ?unworthy love interest? for the Miami avenger. (?Too needy,? she says.) I see where she?s coming from, but I?m a little disappointed with all the Deb-hate that is constantly churning among Dexter viewers. Deb has shown plenty of strength, resolve and intelligence this season! And as Laura pointed out in our chat, she rocked the Ray Speltzer interrogation. I don?t want to see her get with Dexter?ew?but if she did, their children would be gorgeous little crime-fighting hotheads who would certainly warrant their own spinoff. Anyway, commenter Good Eric objects to the Deb-plus-Dex plotline not because of implausibility or impatience with Debra but because ?Rita was the one. I don?t like dream sequences, but I wouldn?t complain one bit if everything after Rita?s death was a bad dream that Dexter wakes up from during the series finale.?
But! It turns out all our speculation about incest is moot because TV Line just published an interview with Jennifer Carpenter?and she says the showrunners never took the prospect of a romantic relationship between Dexter and Debra seriously. Quoth Carpenter:
Anyone who does what Dexter does has to be seductive at some point. He can look at a person, know what they need and deliver, which is why he can manipulate so gracefully. The tease at a possible relationship between the two last season was really a tool to let Deb discover and not attack when she found out who and what he is. At the end of the day, a real relationship is about intimacy and endurance, and it doesn?t necessarily have to be a sexual element for them to be relating to each other in an intimate way? which they are.
So I guess that?s settled. Critics are also rushing to pick apart Dexter?s outburst in the parking lot?the one where he responds to Deb?s accusation that he is putting Harrison in danger by darkly rumbling, ?Everything is in my control.?
Alex Moaba at the Huffington Post reflects, ?There are moments every now and then when watching Dexter that you are reminded that it feels a little weird to be rooting for a serial killer, even if he only kills other serial killers. I had this experience mid-way through "Run," when Dexter showed off some of his sociopathic hubris and maniacally yelled at Deb, "I control everything!" (Which is not exactly what he said, but close enough, and point taken.)
Over at Guyism, Chris Spags calls the retort, delivered in the ?most criminally insane of voices,? ?fairly crazy.? But the Baltimore Sun?s Cassandra Berube just thinks Dexter is ?[reestablishing] himself as top Miami dog,? and adds, ?You might as well run now while you have the chance.? I?d still love to hear more about how control factors into the Tao of Dexter, and whether his desire for control is an asset or an Achilles? heel. Commenters?
Finally, some people challenged our automatic assumption that Isaac and Viktor were father and son. ?Is Isaac Viktor's father, or his lover?? wrote Spectrum Rider, before noting the ?paucity of ordinary, everyday gay characters on Dexter, and the lack of any of them among the regular police supporting cast.? As Beth in CA argued, an erotic relationship would explain why Isaac showed no interest in the naked women at the strip club?although we could also understand if he were preoccupied at the time by the mystery of Viktor?s killer.
