Discovering the Community: Wellness Talk | Spreaker's Corner

George Batista navigates the waters of health and fitness on his successful show Wellness Talk, offering tons of information on how to live in a better state of being. He spoke to us about his professional career and how he?s channeled it in his show.

Do you mind introducing yourself?

My name is George Batista and I?m a Wellness Specialist, Nutrition Consultant and Yoga instructor. My podcast goes over the latest news in the alternative health field.

How did you get into wellness and nutrition?

I always played sports and exercised even as a kid so it has always been a part of my life. As I got older I got into Yoga and the wellness philosophies which have always interested me. As a person who has dealt with my own chronic conditions such as bronchitis, spinal stenosis and sinus infections, I was always looking for ways to deal with it other than over the counter meds. So I felt that the best way to do it was to learn all I can about self-health. That eventually led to certifications in nutrition, yoga and wellness. Since I was able to heal most of my conditions, now I do my best to work with and educate others to do the same.

That?s inspiring! When did you start podcasting? Had you already been doing it before coming to Spreaker?

I?m pretty new to podcasting. I started around January so I had been doing it before I came to Spreaker. However, the show seems to be getting a good response on Spreaker and people seem to like it, so I?m happy about that. I think we need more of these type of shows.

Agreed. How do you prepare each show?

Basically, I do a lot of research before each show. I go through studies and articles that I find interesting. I try to look at articles that are backed up by good science. A lot of my content comes from online sources but some of it also comes from books or even magazines I have recently read. Usually once I site the info from the articles then I add in my own thoughts from my knowledge and experience. So it?s a combination of things but by the time the show comes up, I have about 5-6 important articles that are highlighted and ready to go. On top of that, I may answer a question that I get from someone who has emailed me or a general question I come across.

What are your basic rules on living a healthy lifestyle?

My rules are pretty simple. I don?t like to complicate things. I usually focus on diet, fitness, stress management and overall outlook. If you pay attention to those key points, I feel you can live pretty long and happy. People think a healthy lifestyle is just eating and fitness, but that?s just the half of it. The other half is how you approach life. Are you happy with what you?re doing? Are you living authentically? Do you surround yourself with good energy? Are you stuck in past habit patterns? These questions have as much to do with creating health as all the other aspects. Some people have to work on their own thinking first before they can even attempt to eat right and workout consistently.

How do you feel about the state of wellness in the US today?

Well, on the positive side, I do feel there is a movement happening slowly but surely. More people are embracing wellness, however it?s so far behind because of all the sickness this country is experiencing. It doesn?t help that the mainstream medical community keeps pushing a ?world is flat? idea of health. If they were to finally embrace how wellness really works and how the human body actually works, we would probably be in the top 10 in health and longevity in the world but as long as they engage in sick care, toxic drugs and suppression of symptoms, we will always be behind. That?s why I do my show because I want people to wake up and realize they have more power over their own health than they think.

With knowledge we can turn the situation around. What are your favorite success stories?

I?m happy when anyone tells me something is working for them. I have had people come up to me and say that just one tip I shared with them made all the difference and now they are losing weight or working out again. So whether it?s big or small changes, I love hearing about it.

Do you use Spreaker?s interactive features to chat with your fans?

I have not really taken advantage of it yet but I plan to. I?m still fairly new to Spreaker but I?m enjoying it. Plus, I do invite them to email me questions and I answer some on the show.

What do you do to reach listeners? Do you rely on social media, or do you use other channels of communication?

Yes, I use Facebook, Twitter and my own site. I was never that big on them in the past but I have come to realize that they are a valuable tools for reaching fans and marketing. So I think that used properly they are great.

Has this podcast helped you professionally?

Absolutely, and it?s really helping me reach so many people. The main reason I started this was to share and educate. If I get more people that want to work with me because of it then it?s just a bonus.

We hope so for you! Anything else you?d like to share?

I?m working putting together future events like webinars and possibly recording some CD?s on health, so stay tuned. Other than that I just want to say that I think Spreaker is a great tool and very user friendly. I?m very happy to be involved with you guys. Thank you for the opportunity to share my thoughts and thanks to all those who listen in every week.

Thanks so much, George!
