The Federal Communications Commission announced today that it will be working with the four major mobile carriers (Verizon Wireless, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile) to work towards a system reducing cell phone theft.
The plan that they are working on is to create a centralized database of lost or stolen cell phone information that will make it easy to track the devices and cut off?their service.
According to a report by the New York Times, approximately one out of three robberies in the U.S. includes the theft of cellular devices. In New York, about 40 percent of all robberies are cell phones, while in Washington D.C., about 38 percent of robberies deal with cell phones.
Thieves?often then?sell the stolen phones on sites like eBay, Amazon, or Craigslist. The partnership among the FCC and the major carriers hope to reduce the profit these thieves make.
Although the four major mobile carriers are partnered with the FCC, smaller wireless carriers are expected to join in the partnership over the next couple years as well.
