Huawei Honor 2 passes through the FCC with North American 3G, not much else

Huawei upped its ante in the smartphone games with the Honor 2 just weeks ago, but with few mentions of where the phone maker might place its bets outside of its native China. An FCC filing has at least raised the slim chance that Huawei might look to North America. The newly-tested device doles out HSPA+ support on the 850MHz, 1,700MHz and 1,900MHz bands, letting it work with the 3G of just about any American or Canadian GSM carrier. Without any LTE to speak of, though, the Honor 2 variant is more likely to appear on a smaller network that doesn't yet have access to the faster data, such as T-Mobile or Wind -- if it shows up at all, that is. As FCC approvals only occasionally spoil a launch, we'll mostly be waiting to see if Huawei or carriers step forward before anticipating the mid-tier phone on this side of the Pacific.

'Bigfoot' is part human, claims study based on purported Sasquatch DNA

Because the Texas veterinarian has released no information at all about her findings (nor have they been examined by outside experts), it's impossible to evaluate the validity of her conclusions.

By Benjamin Radford,?LiveScience Bad Science Columnist / November 27, 2012

Tom Biscardi, CEO and founder of BIGFOOT Inc., holds up a picture he claims is the mouth of Bigfoot, in 2008. The claims were later revealed to be a hoax.

Genetic testing confirms the legendary Bigfoot is a human relative that arose some 15,000 years ago ? at least according to a press release issued by a company called DNA Diagnostics detailing supposed work by a Texas veterinarian.

The release and alleged study by Melba S. Ketchum also suggests such cryptids had sex with modern human females that resulted in hairy hominin hybrids, but the scientific community is dubious about her claim.

"A team of scientists can verify that their five-year long DNA study, currently under peer-review, confirms the existence of a novel hominin hybrid species, commonly called 'Bigfoot' or 'Sasquatch,' living in North America," the release reads. "Researchers' extensive DNA sequencing suggests that the legendary Sasquatch is a human relative that arose approximately 15,000 years ago."

For her study, Ketchum obtained three "whole nuclear genomes from purported?Sasquatch?samples. The genome sequencing shows that Sasquatch mtDNA is identical to modern?Homo sapiens, but Sasquatch nuDNA is a novel, unknown hominin related to?Homo sapiens?and other primate species." (Mitochondrial DNA, or mtDNA, is the DNA that resides in the cell's energy-producing structures, and is typically passed down from mothers, while nuclear DNA, nuDNA, resides in the cells' nuclei and is passed down from both parents to offspring.)

"Our data indicate that the North American Sasquatch is a hybrid species, the result of males of an unknown hominin species crossing with female Homo sapiens," the statement reads. [Infographic: Tracking Belief in Bigfoot]

Any proof?

It's a fascinating theory.

So where's the evidence? Well, there is none. Not yet, anyway: Ketchum's research has not appeared in any peer-reviewed scientific journal, and there's no indication when that might happen. If the data are good and the science is sound, any reputable science journal would jump at the chance to be the first to publish this groundbreaking information. Until then, Ketchum has refused to let anyone else see her evidence.

Of course the?history of Bigfoot?is rife with exaggerated and premature claims about?proof of the creature's existence. For decades, various types of evidence have been offered as final, definitive proof, ranging from Bigfoot hair to blood to dead bodies. Without exception, the evidence has always been hoaxed, misidentification or inconclusive.

Because Ketchum has released no information at all about her findings (nor have they been examined by outside experts), it's impossible to evaluate the validity of her conclusions. But an important clue can be found in her statement that "Sasquatch mtDNA is identical to modern?Homo sapiens."

If the mitochontrial DNA is identical to?Homo sapiens?(i.e., modern humans), then this suggests one of two options. The first, endorsed by Ketchum, is that Bigfoot ancestors had sex with women about 15,000 years ago and created a half-human hybrid species currently hiding across North America. [Rumor or Reality: The Creatures of Cryptozoology]

There is, however, another, simpler interpretation of such results: The samples were contaminated. Whatever the sample originally was ? Bigfoot, bear, human or something else ? it's possible that the people who collected and handled the specimens accidentally introduced their DNA into the sample, which can easily occur with something as innocent as a spit, sneeze or cough. No one outside of Ketchum's team knows how this alleged Bigfoot DNA was collected, from where or by whom. It could have been collected by the world's top forensics experts, or by a pair of amateur Bigfoot buffs with no evidence-gathering training.

Confirming it's Bigfoot

How did the team definitively determine that the samples were from a Bigfoot? Did they take a blood or saliva sample from?a living Bigfoot? If so, how did they get that close, and why didn't they simply capture it or photograph it? If the samples were found in the wild, how do they know it wasn't left by another animal ? or possibly even a hunter, hiker or camper who left human genetic material?

Previous alleged Bigfoot samples subjected to DNA analysis have been deemed "unknown" or "unidentified." However, "unknown" or "unidentified" results do not mean "Bigfoot." There are many reasons why a DNA sample might come back unknown, including that it was contaminated or too degraded by environmental conditions. Or it could simply mean that the animal it came from was not among the reference samples that the laboratory used for comparison. There is no reference sample of?Bigfoot DNA?to compare it with, so by definition, there cannot be a conclusive match.

Ketchum also issued a statementrequesting that the U.S. government immediately recognize Bigfoot as "an indigenous people and immediately protect their human and Constitutional rights against those who would see in their physical and cultural differences a 'license' to hunt, trap, or?kill them." Since no Bigfoot has ever been hunted, trapped or killed, it's not clear that the creatures ? if they exist ? require any special federal protection.

Ketchum's is not the only genetics-based project intended to find Bigfoot. Earlier this year, researchers from Oxford University and the Lausanne Museum of Zoology announced they were collecting samples of?alleged Bigfoot and Yeti hair?for genetic identification. Oxford geneticist Bryan Sykes collected materials from the public from May through September, and is currently conducting DNA analysis. Once the results are in, he plans to submit his results to a peer-reviewed scientific journal.

If Ketchum has the definitive proof she claims, the world will soon know about it, and Bigfoot will be proven once and for all. On the other hand, if the evidence never appears, or is inconclusive and flawed, the search will continue.

Google Drive adds site publishing, won't quite replace your Geocities page

The hit parade of Google Drive updates continues. As of today, account holders can publish web content to their Drive storage in a public folder accessible from any browser; it can even host JavaScript for those who want to run web apps from their personal space. Lest we rush to toss out our existing web hosts, however, Google has some inherent ground rules. Content has to be static, and any links to other pages or files in the folder need a special approach to show web addresses that make sense to mere humans. As such, Google Drive won't quite relive the glory days of 1998 and simple web tools; at least we can still add a permanent "under construction" GIF.

OceanGate Discovers WWII-Era Grumman F6F Hellcat Plane off Florida

OceanGate Inc., a global provider of deep-sea manned submersible solutions, announced Tuesday the discovery of a World War II-era Grumman F6F Hellcat plane off the coast of Miami Beach.

The plane was discovered during one of an ongoing series of dives in which OceanGate has been using its Teledyne BlueView high-frequency sonar and high-definition photo and video equipment to gather data pertaining to the artificial reefs in Miami-Dade County waters. Recognizing the potential historical and military significance of the find, OceanGate contacted officials at both the Smithsonian Institution and the U.S. Navy, who identified the wreck as a Grumman F6F Hellcat fighter aircraft.

?The discovery of this artifact is significant because it helps us reflect on and learn more about our country?s heritage, but also because it highlights the key role that direct observation plays in undersea exploration,? said Stockton Rush, co-founder and CEO of OceanGate. ?Our sonar technology and ability to observe the undersea environment first-hand ultimately led to the discovery of this plane.?

OceanGate?s deep-sea manned submersible solutions offer a unique platform for direct underwater exploration. Equipped with high frequency 2D and 3D sonar equipment, as well as a multitude of data collection capabilities, OceanGate?s Antipodes submersible, which enabled the discovery, allows a team of up to five people to collaborate at depth and gather high-quality underwater imagery.

?We were thrilled to be a part of this expedition,? said visiting explorer Chris Welsh, co-founder of Virgin Oceanic, who was part of the crew on the first dive. ?Nothing translates to others the excitement of a find like the direct viewing of a wreck first-hand, which shows the value manned submersibles can bring to many research communities.?

Findings from initial surface-sonar side scans, provided by NOAA, displayed a 33-meter (100-foot) long target, which led the OceanGate team to assume it was a sunken vessel. However, during the initial dive to the site on June 29, 2012, the sonar technology on OceanGate?s Antipodes submersible produced the first-ever, close-range, underwater scans of the 28-foot long, distinctive Grumman F6F Hellcat, at a depth of more than 240 feet. Since the first dive, the OceanGate team has returned for additional observation and data collection on eight missions including a recent long-duration dive of eight hours.

OceanGate will donate its collection of photographs, videos, and technical scans of the Hellcat to the Naval History & Heritage Command in Washington, D.C., as a way to mark the recent Veterans Day holiday. The files will be used in the preservation of this federally protected site and in possible future research on the plane.

?Sunken U.S. Navy ships and aircraft are protected from unauthorized disturbance under the Sunken Military Craft Act,? said Dr. Robert Neyland, head of the Naval History & Heritage Command?s Underwater Archaeology Branch. ?It is important to preserve and document Navy and Marine Corps wreck sites as an outstanding part of our nation?s heritage. It is critical to remember that many of these wreck sites are also graves. NHHC, with more than 17,000 ship and aircraft wrecks lost worldwide, welcomes cooperation and partnership with responsible private companies like OceanGate to assist us with our mission.?

During World War II, the Grumman Hellcat was flown by both the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps and was a mainstay of the air war in the Pacific. The state of Florida was an active training center for military fighter pilots during World War II, and records from the Naval History & Heritage Command indicate that 79 Hellcats were lost off of Florida?s Atlantic coast between 1943 and 1952, with only eight of these losses occurring after 1945. Not all of these losses involved fatalities, as the Command has documentation of many successful water landings and bailouts.

?In the course of its production run, 12,275 Hellcats were delivered to the Navy,? added Bob Rasmussen, director of the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Florida. ?During peak production one each hour, 24 hours per day, rolled off the Grumman line. Of these only a handful exist today and the discovery of one more, even under 240 feet of Atlantic Ocean, is important to Naval Aviation History.?

Presentation: Tyrannosaurs of New Mexico

Until recently tyrannosaurs were known only by Tyrannosaurus rex and a few closely related species, all from the Late Cretaceous of North America and Asia. Within the last decade the number of tyrannosaur species has grown to more than 20 and range back to the Middle Jurassic. They are now among the most intensely studied dinosaurs. These specimens have led to a much greater understanding of dinosaur evolution, anatomy, and other aspects of their biology including growth dynamics, population structure, feeding, locomotion, and biogeography. New Mexico was home to at least two tyrannosaurs, Tyrannosaurus and Bistahieversor (aka, the Bisti Beast)?a recently discovered skull and partial skeleton that represents the most complete tyrannosaur ever found in New Mexico.

Rice meeting with senators fails to dampen criticism

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice on Tuesday failed to win over her harshest Republican critics in the U.S. Senate who are threatening to block her nomination if President Barack Obama chooses her for Secretary of State or another top post in his second-term Cabinet.

Rice met for about an hour behind closed doors at the U.S. Capitol with Senators John McCain, Lindsey Graham and Kelly Ayotte. They have openly criticized her for initial comments after the September 11 attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi that suggested it was a spontaneous event arising from protests of an anti-Islam film rather than a premeditated attack.

The U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans were killed in the attack on the Benghazi mission and a nearby CIA annex. Intelligence officials later said the attack was possibly tied to al Qaeda affiliates.

"We are significantly troubled by many of the answers that we got, and some that we didn't get, concerning evidence that was overwhelming leading up to the attack on our consulate," McCain told reporters after the meeting.

"It is clear that the information that she gave the American people was incorrect when she said that it was a spontaneous demonstration triggered by a hateful video," he said.

"It was not, and there was compelling evidence at the time that that was certainly not the case, including statements by Libyans as well as other Americans who are fully aware that people don't bring mortars and rocket-propelled grenades to spontaneous demonstrations," McCain said.

Republicans have argued that the Obama administration tried to play down the terrorist angle in its initial comments to avoid undermining the president's claims of success in fighting al Qaeda in the run-up to the November 6 election.

Rice was accompanied by acting CIA Director Michael Morell and was not seen by reporters, but later issued a statement saying: "We explained that the talking points provided by the intelligence community, and the initial assessment upon which they were based, were incorrect in a key respect: there was no protest or demonstration in Benghazi."

"While, we certainly wish that we had had perfect information just days after the terrorist attack, as is often the case, the intelligence assessment has evolved," she said. "We stressed that neither I nor anyone else in the Administration intended to mislead the American people at any stage in this process."

Obama has defended Rice and said if senators have a problem with the administration's handling of Benghazi they should "go after me" rather than try to "besmirch her reputation."

Graham also criticized U.S. intelligence agencies that wrote the talking points on which Rice based her public comments.

"I'm very disappointed in our intelligence community. I think they failed in many ways. But with a little bit of inquiry and curiosity, I think it would be pretty clear that to explain this episode as related to a video that created a mob that turned into a riot was far afield," he said. "And at the end of the day, we're going to get to the bottom of this."

Rice's controversial Benghazi statements were based on a set of unclassified talking points prepared by U.S. intelligence agencies for members of Congress.

The initial draft written by the CIA referred to "attacks" carried out by "extremists with ties to al Qaeda." However by the time Rice received them, "attacks" had changed to "demonstrations" and "with ties to al Qaeda" had been deleted, multiple U.S. sources have said.

The White House has denied making those edits and members of Congress are trying to determine where the changes were made.

The senators who met with Rice remained unconvinced by her responses and said her visit left them with greater concerns than before the meeting.

"I wouldn't vote for anybody being nominated out of the Benghazi debacle until I had answers about what happened that I don't have today," Graham said.

Asked whether he would block such a nomination, Graham said: "Oh, absolutely. I would place a hold on anybody that wanted to be promoted for any job that had a role in the Benghazi situation."

White House spokesman Jay Carney said the questions about Rice's appearance on the talk shows and the talking points had been answered. "The focus on - some might say obsession on - comments made on Sunday shows seems to me and to many to be misplaced," he said.

Daughter of Anna Nicole Smith, six, models for Guess

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The six-year-old daughter of dead Playboy model and reality television star Anna Nicole Smith has stepped in front of the camera like her mother to model for U.S. clothing brand Guess, the company said on Monday.

Photos of Dannielynn Birkhead, who was five-months-old when her mother died in 2007, were released as part of a campaign for the brand's kids line.

Smith - best known for marrying oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall when he was 89 and she was 26 - famously modeled for Guess in 1992-93 shortly after appearing on the cover of Playboy magazine.

Dannielynn's father, photographer Larry Birkhead, told television show "Entertainment Tonight" that his daughter enjoyed herself on the shoot.

"The first thing she asked is 'When will I be on the shopping bags like Mommy?'" Birkhead said. "I know that Anna's looking at this and seeing how great this will be."

Anna Nicole Smith died in Florida at the age of 39 from a prescription drug overdose. Dannielynn was the subject of at least six paternity claims following her birth in September 2006. Birkhead was later confirmed as the father following a DNA test.

What Stocks Albert Einstein Would Invest in Today - The Market Oracle

Peak Price Not 'Peak Oil', Free 26 Page Report

Companies / Investing 2012 Nov 27, 2012 - 03:33 AM

By: Investment_U

Companies

Alexander Green writes: Albert Einstein wasn?t famous as an investor. He was a genius who revolutionized theoretical physics. But if he were alive today, it?s pretty clear what he would be doing with his money. And you should be doing it, too.

Let me explain?

It?s a truism that when times are good, investors tend to forget about risk and focus on opportunity. When times are bad, investors tend to forget about opportunity and focus on risk.

This is exactly the opposite of what they should be doing, of course.

But today you have a great opportunity to both limit risk and generate superb returns in your stock portfolio with ? stifle that yawn ? stodgy, old dividend-paying stocks. These investments aren?t nearly as boring as you may think. And in the decade ahead, their returns are likely to be outstanding.

The Basics of Dividend-Paying Stocks

Let?s start with the basics. Dividend yields are a company?s annualized payment divided by its share price. When share prices fall ? as many have over the last month ? yields rise.

It still astonishes me that investors are willing to lend money to the U.S. Treasury for the next 10 years at less than 2%. What a terrible bet, one that virtually guarantees a negative, real (i.e. after inflation) return over the next decade.

A far better bet is a diversified portfolio of dividend-paying stocks. Understand that, over the long run, stock market performance is tied to economic growth. And ? news flash ? the growth outlook in the developed world today isn?t exactly torrid.

Understand furthermore that over the eight decades through 2010, dividends contributed 44% of the stock market?s return, according to Fidelity Investments. Sometimes it was much more. During the 1970s, for example, dividends generated 71% of returns.

Dividend stocks today represent an unusual opportunity. U.S. corporations are sitting on $2 trillion in cash, a record amount. More S&P 500 companies have initiated or raised dividends this year through August than during the same period in any of the last seven years. And there?s plenty of room for more increases. Payments are less than one third of profits, a historic low.

If you?re a growth-oriented investor, you probably don?t think much about dividends. You?re interested in doubling or tripling your money. And with a bit of patience, you can.

The Historical Returns of Dividend-Paying Stocks

Analysts often talk about the lost decade, how stocks have essentially returned nothing since the market highs in the spring of 2000. But the story has been very different with dividend-paying stocks.

Over the past decade ? with dividends reinvested:

  • Oil producer Chevron Corp. (NYSE: CVX) has returned 200%.
  • Altria Group (NYSE: MO), the U.S. tobacco giant, has returned more than 300%.
  • Even musty old Con Edison (NYSE: ED) ? a utility that was born 23 years before Thomas Edison ? has returned 130% over the period.

Today there are plenty of blue-chip stocks with decent (and growing) dividends attached. Consider Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ), Procter & Gamble (NYSE: PG), Exxon Mobil (NYSE: XOM), AT&T (NYSE: T), Merck (NYSE: MRK), or Verizon (NYSE: VZ).

Or, for a more-diversified approach, plunk for a few shares of PowerShares Dividend Achievers Portfolio (NYSE: PFM), the Vanguard High Dividend Yield ETF (NYSE: VYM), or the WisdomTree Total Dividend Fund (NYSE: DTD).

Dividend stocks alone won?t generate a mouth-watering return. But dividends will rise over time ? and surprising things happen when you reinvest them. Picture a snowball rolling downhill.

Albert Einstein understood this. As he observed, money compounding ?is the most powerful force in the universe.?

Good Investing,

Alex

Did you see that? How could you miss it?

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? You may have received CPR training some time ago, but would you remember the proper technique in an emergency? Would you know what to do in the event of an earthquake or a fire? A new UCLA psychology study shows that people often do not recall things they have seen -- or at least walked by -- hundreds of times.

For the study, 54 people who work in the same building were asked if they knew the location of the fire extinguisher nearest their office. While many of the participants had worked in their offices for years and had passed the bright red extinguishers several times a day, only 13 out of the 54 -- 24 percent -- knew the location.

When asked to find a fire extinguisher, however, everyone was able to do so within a few seconds; most were surprised they had never noticed them. The researchers found no significant differences between men and women, or between older and younger adults.

"Just because we've seen something many times doesn't mean we remember it or even notice it," said Alan Castel, an associate professor of psychology at UCLA and lead author of the study. "If I asked you to draw the front of a dime or the front of a dollar bill from memory, how well could you do that? You might get some elements right. Do you know who the president is? On the dime, is he facing left or right? Does it say 'In God We Trust' on the front of the dollar or the back? Do you know what else it says? You've seen it so many times, but you probably haven't paid much attention to it."

Castel said that not noticing things isn't necessarily bad, particularly when those things are not important in your daily life. "It might be a good thing not to burden your memory with information that is not relevant to you," he said.

But with safety information, such as knowing where fire extinguishers are or what to do in an emergency, being prepared can, of course, be very useful.

"When you're on an airplane, do you know where the life vest is and what to do in the event of an emergency?" Castel asked. "You've been told many times, but how would you respond under stressful conditions, when there could be smoke and people screaming?"

A few months after being asked the location of the nearest fire extinguisher, the study participants were asked again if they knew where the closest one was. All of them knew.

"We don't notice something if we're attending to something else," Castel said. "Fire extinguishers are bright red and very conspicuous, but we're almost blind to them until they become relevant."

What does this tell us about the importance of training, whether for emergencies or something as common as learning a new computer program?

Castel stresses that making errors during training is useful. As with the fire extinguisher exercise, errors -- or simple oversights -- can teach us that we don't know something well and need to pay more attention in order to remember it.

"It's good if errors happen during training and not during an event where you need the information," he said. "That's part of the learning process."

The study is published in the journal Attention, Perception, & Psychophysics.

Castel's co-authors are Michael Vendetti, a UCLA psychology graduate student, and Keith Holyoak, a UCLA professor of psychology. The study's participants work in UCLA's psychology building.

'Father of digital imaging' Bryce Bayer dies aged 83

Bryce Bayer, former Eastman Kodak scientist, and inventor of the Bayer Filter -- found with most modern digital image sensors -- has sadly recently passed. Bayer's work with Kodak left an indelible mark on almost every digital image you see today, both figuratively, and literally. His eponymous color filter, developed in 1976, used a mosaic layout of red green and blue filters that enables light sensors to create full color images. The design imitates the way the human eye perceives color, with twice as much green as red or blue, and the resulting output is then interpreted with "demosaicing" algorithms to produce an accurate, RGB image. Bayer's work also included significant contributions to other areas of digital photography, including storage, enhancement and printing. Bayer died on November 13th in Bath, Maine aged 83. So, next time you're enjoying your digital memories, spare a thought for the man who helped make them all possible

Zsa Zsa Gets The Bird | Baby Boomer Stories

By Larry Teren

It is possible to argue that Zsa Zsa Gabor was to the 1950s and 60s what Paris Hilton and her ilk are today. Not concidental, Zsa Zsa was once married for a few years in the 1940?s to Paris? great-grandfather Conrad Hilton, the founder of the fabulously successful Hilton Hotel chain. Conrad, the second of Zsa Zsa?s nine husbands, was thirty years older than her.

Zsa Zsa Gabor , still alive at the age of 95 as of November 2012, made a career of basically playing herself in several movies and countless television shows. Even though she played the blonde buxom bombshell on screen, in the real world she was outspoken for several causes and confident of her actions.

Zsa Zsa Gabor loved animals and when her Bel Air home burnt to the ground while she was performing on the road, all she was concerned about was that her several dogs were able to escape to safety. She mentioned in her 1991 autobiography two memorable events involving birds.

The first occurred when she bought a new mansion in Bel Air and hired a team of workmen to renovate a section of the house. Early one Monday morning she arrived at the house to inspect the work and unlocked the front door. When she opened it, she found a bird lying dead on the drawing room floor. The bird had apparently flown into the house on Friday before the workmen left and was trapped inside all weekend. With no source of food, the bird starved to death. She picked it up and gave it a decent burial in the back yard. She could not live in that house believing that the death of the bird caused bad luck that would come back to haunt her. She never moved in and sold the Bel Air home at a significant loss.

The second occasion involved a macaw she bought at Neiman-Marcus on a trip to Dallas. She named him Ceasar and was warned by the store to feed him an orange every morning. She followed that instruction very carefully for a few months. Then, one day she forgot to do so. A few hours went by and didn?t even bother to check on Ceasar. Finally, she remembered her obligation, put down the book and went toward the kitchen. She gave a look toward his cage and saw that Ceasar immediately gave her a long stare. As macaws are parrots that can be taught to speak, Ceasar let out with , ?forget you!? (Dear reader, you can imagine what he really said.)

Zsa Zsa cut up a piece of orange and gave it to the parrot and he ate it peacefully, but from that point and on, any time she or her husband would pass by the bird, it would shriek, ?forget you!? Zsa Zsa?s husband got tired of this treatment and proclaimed that the bird had to go back to Nieman-Marcus. The store agreed to take back Ceasar. As he was carried out of the mansion and leaving the life of luxury, his last words were, of course, ?forget you!? and seemed to have one claw lifted off its perch.

Will.i.am promises to turn your iPhone into a 14-megapixel 'genius-phone'

William promises to turn your iPhone into a 14megapixel 'geniusphone'

Not content with his deliberately undefined role at Intel, the main pulse behind the Black Eyed Peas is preparing for yet another incursion into the world of technology -- this time by launching a dedicated camera accessory for the iPhone 4 and iPhone 5 (and presumably the 4S, too). Will.i.am claims the device has "its own sensor and a better flash" and will "turn your smartphone into a genius-phone" by replacing the native 5- or 8-megapixel camera module with one that churns out 14-megapixel images instead. The Telegraph reports that the add-on will be the first of a series of "i.am+" branded accessories that will launch on November 28th. No pricing has been revealed so far, but the range will be sold solely by Selfridges in London and -- much like Harrods with its own glam gadget exclusives -- that store isn't particularly known for bargains.

Gaza truce holds as region steps back from brink

The Egyptian-mediated cease-fire is still in effect; Hamas calls the truce a victory, while reaction in Israel is mixed.

By Ibrahim Barzak and Karin Laub,?The Associated Press / November 22, 2012

Hamas leaders in Gaza declared victory over Israel on Thursday, and thousands of flag-waving supporters rallied in celebration as the battered territory entered its first day of calm under an Egyptian-brokered truce that ended the worst cross-border fighting in four years.

Eight days of punishing Israeli airstrikes on Gaza and a barrage of Hamas rocket fire on Israeli ended inconclusively. While Israel said it inflicted heavy damage on the militants, Gaza's Hamas rulers claimed that Israel's decision not to send ground troops into the territory, as it had four years ago, was a sign of a new Hamas deterrent power.

"Resistance fighters changed the rules of the game with the occupation (Israel), upset its calculations," Gaza Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas, who had attended the rally, said later in a televised speech. "The option of invading Gaza after this victory is gone and will never return."

IN PICTURES:?Gaza vs. Israel: Middle East battles disrupt daily life?

At the same time, Haniyeh urged Gaza fighters to respect the truce and to "guard this deal as long as Israel respects it."

The mood in Israel was mixed. Some were grateful that quiet had been restored without a ground operation that could have cost the lives of soldiers. Others ? particular those in southern Israel hit by rockets over the past 13 years ? thought the operation was abandoned too quickly.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the offensive's aims of halting Gaza rocket fire and weakening Hamas were achieved. "I know there are citizens who were expecting a harsher response," he said, adding that Israel is prepared to act if the cease-fire is violated.

Despite the tough talk, the cease-fire raised hopes of a new era between Israel and Hamas. The two sides are now to negotiate a deal that would end years of Gaza rocket fire on Israel and open the borders of the blockaded Palestinian territory. Talks are supposed to begin sometime after a 24-hour period that began with the cease-fire late Wednesday.

However, the vague language in the agreement and deep hostility between the combatants made it far from certain that the bloodshed would end or that either side will get everything it wants. Israel seeks an end to weapons smuggling into Gaza, while Hamas wants a complete lifting of the border blockade imposed in 2007, after the Hamas takeover of Gaza.

Israel launched the offensive Nov. 14 to halt renewed rocket fire from Gaza, unleashing some 1,500 airstrikes on Hamas-linked targets, while Hamas and other Gaza militant groups showered Israel with just as many rockets.

The eight days of fighting killed 161 Palestinians, including 71 civilians, and five Israelis. Israel also destroyed key symbols of Hamas power, such as the prime minister's office, along with rocket launching sites and Gaza police stations.

In Gaza, the announcement of a truce late Wednesday set off frenzied street celebrations.

"Today is different, the morning coffee tastes different and I feel we are off to a new start," said Ashraf Diaa, a 38-year-old engineer from Gaza City.

Swarm robots perform classical scores inside Georgia Tech's GRITS lab (eyes-on video)

The folks at the Georgia Robotics and InTelligent Systems (Grits) Lab at Georgia Tech have been hard at work for some time now researching swarm robots. A portion of said work deals with tasks that require a group of hi-tech gadgets to individually reach a location and a specific time -- much like the mobile landing platform that we saw last year. The group is given a "score" and must determine how many of the Khepera robots are needed meet the goal, assigning specific roles and determining the shortest route to hitting their targets. One particular demo that we saw involved the swarm bots playing a projected piano of sorts to perform a short snippet of Beethoven's "Fur Elise" -- internal cameras, special "hats" and cameras mounted around the room lend a hand in carrying out the assigned duties.

Musical performance is just one of the projects underway in the GritsLab. A real-world scenario involves the use of swarm robots for convoy cover. Using Parrot AR.Drones alongside the diminutive machines that we saw in action, researchers are looking at ways in which UAVs can be deployed to investigate and eliminate threats to convoys on the ground. This allows for the convoy to take an alternate route if needed while remaining under the watch of at least one UAV. For a look at the aforementioned classically scored action, jump down past the break to take a gander.

Nebraska schools, students show improvement on state tests (AUDIO)

Nebraska public schools and students seemed to be making progress, according to a report issued today by the Nebraska Department of Education.

Nearly three of every four public school districts graduated 90% or more of their high school seniors. Most school districts demonstrated improvement and growth under the new state accountability results.

?First of all, as we reported last August, the overall story is that Nebraska public school students are making progress and we attribute that to Nebraska teachers and administrators who have consistently demonstrated this trend over the last decade,? Nebraska Education Commissioner Roger Breed stated during a news conference today at the Department of Education offices in Lincoln.

More than 152,000 students from all 249 public school districts took the standardized tests, from elementary schools to middle schools as well as juniors in high school.

The new accountability report uses student scores to measure the progress of their school districts, whether the districts demonstrated both improvement and growth; whether test scores this year exceeded those the previous year.

?On this measure, 185 of 248 school districts demonstrated improvement across the grades on the reading tests,? according to Breed. ?177 of 248 school districts demonstrated improvement across the grades on the math tests.?

This year, 180 or 249 Nebraska public school districts graduated 90% of more of their high school seniors. More than 50 school districts graduated all of their seniors. Statewide, 88% of the high school seniors graduated, up from 86% last year.

As for student scores, 74.2% of the state students passed the reading tests, up from 71.8% the year before. Math scores improved from 62.8% to 67.4%. In science, 66.9% scored proficient and in writing, 73.3%.
