Below is a recent press release about our job creation project we are working on with the Georgia Small Business Development Center. We?re excited to play a direct roll in helping the country recover and proud of our SBDC for turning to franchising to help people participate in creating jobs:
Leslie Kuban, FranNet consultant, working with GA SBDC to jumpstart new businessesAtlanta, GA ? The Georgia Small Business Development Center network is turning to the franchise industry to open several new Georgia businesses and create much needed jobs.
The SBDC hired FranNet consultant Leslie Kuban to help coach transitioning corporate workers, retiring executives and returning veterans on the cusp of starting a new business through the franchise selection and purchase process. Kuban and the SBDC are hosting a series of 10 free seminars and workshops funded by the Small Business Jobs Act, HR5297.
?When Congress funded HR5297, we realized that we needed to launch programs that would really help,? said Eric Bonaparte, Assistant State Director of the Georgia SBDC. ?Our statistics show that eight out of 10 start-up businesses fail and that franchises typically have a higher success rate. Most franchises have a more proven system of business and are more attractive to the type of potential business owner in the market today. We believe opening more franchises is the fastest way to create small business jobs.?
The seminars offer free guidance to qualified potential business owners actively seeking to open a new business. Many people in previously stable careers are opting for business ownership as a more viable way to control their financial future.
Kuban?s company, FranNet of Georgia, provides expert advice to transitioning workers, executives, and veterans, guiding them through franchise research and selection for the best fit. INC magazine recently ranked FranNet, a North American network of franchise consultants, as one of the fastest growing companies in the U.S. and one of its top 10 franchise companies. 2011 has been a record year for FranNet as larger numbers of corporate workers transition from careers to franchise ownership.
?Big corporations often steal the headlines, but small businesses, especially franchises, are where job creation is,? said Kuban. ?So many workers are unsure about the economy and the future; by opening a franchise, they can gain more control over their income and most importantly, they can help by creating much needed jobs.?
FRANdata, a national company that compiles franchise industry statistics, reports that the average new franchise creates 10 new jobs. Franchising is booming in an otherwise sluggish economy and the International Franchise Association expects over 19,000 new franchised businesses to open by the end of 2011. ?Many franchise companies are actively expanding and adding new locations.
?As far as we know, Georgia was the only SBDC to tap into franchising to help with job creation,? said Bonanparte. ?On a recent director?s call with other SBDC leaders, centers from all over the country were curious about what we?re accomplishing and want to replicate it in their states.?
It?s a good thing, too. The SBDC has to report on the number of jobs it creates with the federal funding by the end of 2012. Kuban and the SBDC expect to help open several new businesses in that time which could potentially create hundreds of jobs.
The free seminar is designed for anyone who is transitioning from the military or a corporate career and is considering opening a new business within the next six months and has a minimum of $50,000 in startup capital. Attendees will get valuable technical and consulting advice about financing options, research assistance and funding help.
The next seminar is Thursday, November 10, 2011 (10am-12pm) at Kennesaw State University SBDC. RSVP to 770-423-6450 or visit the link below.
