Thursday?? Really it?s Thursday! Today is my first day of break!? Wait?? What do you mean?? I mean that the Massage Intensive Class is over!? No more M-R classes from 2-7 locked in a room with no windows!? Can you tell my spirits are up?? My spirits are also up because I finally feel like my body is starting to heal.? Last Friday my friend Joy and I traveled to Portland, OR to meet some friends for the weekend.? This was going to be my first real experience to walk around Portland and?SEE POWELL?s, the Largest Independent Bookstore in the US of A!
This is Rachel, a really interesting girl who goes to law school with Joy?s friends and I before going into Powell?s.?
?
While Portland and Powell?s were Amazing, I severely screwed my cervical vertebrae up.? Do not fall asleep on a couch and have your neck stuck in Hyperflexion = NO BUENO!
The guy on the left is how I looked sleeping Friday night.?
?
But all is not lost.? Experiencing pain like this is something that I haven?t felt in years, which brought me a few insights about Naturopathic Medicine.
?
So here are the 5 lessons I learned in the past 5 days.
1. Personal Experience is a Trump card-? Wait what?? Generally I?m quoting research paper or textbook to inform people about health and now I say PE is a TRUMP CARD!? To tell you the truth everyone I think knows this.? No matter how fancy we get with research at the end of the day we are all INDIVIDUAL and what applies specifically to me does not apply specifically to you.? So while we can be 99.999% identical?I kinda think we are unique snowflakes, sorry Brad!\
?
2. Pain is a powerful tool for experimentation- It?s simple.? Either you have an intense, can?t sleep migraine headache, or?you don?t!? Well this allowed me to test Tumeric against ibuprofen.? Now I didn?t control the dosage of tumeric (anywhere from (1-2 Tbs) but I was using 400-600mg or 2-3 capsules of liquid ibuprofen for my pain and migraines.? Turns out (as research has already shown) Tumeric is a very powerful anti-inflammatory spice and quite cheap too.? It also seems to be very well tolerated and doesn?t cause GI issues in high doses like NSAIDs have the propensity to do.?
?
I personally just go to the spice aisle, use a tablespoon or 2 in water and drink?.ah, actually chug, it?s kinda strong. You can add honey for greater palatability.
3. Ibruprofen is nice to have as a back-up. ? While experimenting with tumeric two things I did notice were that the time for it to take effect (ie decrease inflammation) and maintain pain relief were longer and shorter respectively as compared to Ibuprofen.? I must admit at first I felt like a failure after doing every naturopathic thing I could do and still failing.? In the end I realized the wisdom of Drs. Zeff and Snider in adding pharmaceuticals into the therapeutic order.?
4. The Body will heal when it?s ready.? After going through 2 chiropractic appointments, a 1 hr professional neck massage, my first ever acupuncture treatment, my own soft-tissue work, and hydrotherapy, I realized that I was rushing my body.? For some reason I thought, ?IF I just know what?s wrong, I can fix it in a second and I?ll be healed.?? This ?thought? is completely counter to advice that I give to clients daily.? The ?Vis? doesn?t work on anyone?s time frame but it?s own.? Patience is key.? It?s funny how we always think we are smarter than nature.?
5. Movement is the key to life- Despite feeling horrible one thing I learned was that moving helped my body.? I got two workouts and tried to walk at least 30 minutes a day.? At a molecular level, everything that is alive vibrates, it oscillates, and it moves!? Stagnation is the beginning of the end.?
As Morgan Freeman say at the end of the Shawshank Redemption.
?Get busy livin, or get busy dyin??You got that right!?
