Despite speculation about his ever-shrinking physique, Gerard Butler says his dramatic weight loss isn't due to anything mysterious -- it's simply work-related.
The Scottish heartthrob, 41, explains that he shed the pounds while preparing for his upcoming movie.
"I'm prepping for a surf movie," Butler told People. "So I'm surfing every day for Mavericks."
In director Curtis Hanson's Jay Moriarty biopic, Mavericks, Butler plays real-life California surfer Rick "Frosty" Hesson, who famously trained big-surf legend Moriarty (played by newcomer Jonny Weston).
No stranger to changing his body for a character, the 300 star has been combining his daily surfing lessons with a strict cardio workout and yoga regimen.
Fans of Butler's King Leonidas should keep fingers crossed that after his surfing-flick gig, he'll be asked to reprise the Spartan ruler in the much-anticipated 300 prequel, Battle of Artemisia.
"I hope that they write a great script and I hope that I love it," the actor told People. "That was my favorite role, and it would be great to go back there and have some fun with it."
