Hartz Mountain Corporation, the makers of Wardley fish food and many other pet foods, is recalling Wardley Advanced Nutrition Perfect Protein Tropical Flake FishFood because it could be contaminated with salmonella. Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, especially in those with weak immune systems. It can affect animals eating the product and there is a risk to humans from handling contaminated products like fish food.

The recall affects 1 oz. containers in the following lot codes:

  • PP34911
  • PP34912
  • PP35011
  • PP35012

Hartz encourages consumers with the product in their possession to discard it and contact the firm for a refund.

No illnesses have been reported in connection with the fish food, though fish owners with the recalled product should still be careful. Salmonella can exist in fish tanks, the substrate, and the ornaments.
