A New York Times best-selling fiction writer and a nationally published poet will kick off the 2012-13 Lindsay J. Cropper Memorial Writers Series this Friday night at the University of San Diego.
Amber Dermont, author of novel The Starboard Sea and currently the Charles Loridans Associate Professor of English and Creative Writing at Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Ga., and Adam O. Davis, whose poetry has appeared in such journals as The Southern Review, The Paris Review and Boston Review, will speak at the Mother Rosalie Hill Hall?s Warren Auditorium.
The program, which typically features readings from the guests? work and time for questions, starts at 7 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. A dessert reception and book signing will follow the event.
Dermont, who has a short-story collection, Damage Control, forthcoming from St. Martin?s Press, will actually make her first USD appearance of the week on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. in the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice?s rooms H and I. This event is the Barrie Cropper Lecture on Creative Writing, which is sponsored by the Cropper Center for Creative Writing. Thursday?s event is free and open to the public.
The Cropper Writers Series, which was inaugurated in Fall 2004, has become an inspiring event for literary enthusiasts. Some USD students have taken advantage of an opportunity to meet and discuss their own creative writing with the guest writers.
Friday?s program is one of three scheduled Cropper Writers Series events during the academic year.
Appearing on Friday, Nov. 2 will be Kevin Young, one of the leading poets of his generation and who is particularly inspired by African American music, namely the blues, and in the bittersweet history of Black America. His appearance will take place in the Manchester Executive Conference Center Auditorium.
The lone spring event in the Cropper Series is scheduled for March 15, 2013, also in the Manchester Auditorium. Fiction writer Lynn Freed, author of six novels, a collection of short stories and essays, and whose work has appeared in The New Yorker, Harper?s and The Atlantic Monthly, will appear along with veteran poet Ben Doller, who resides in San Diego.
The Cropper Writers Series is supported by USD?s Department of English.
